Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Bah How could I? Everytime he did not see the little menace he said "Where is the menace?" The man cave offered to reprieve. LOL

well of course Lizzie is ticked...she has obtained the "special" status and you take it away....how dare you.

Cuz I'm the mean evil queen?

I put Georgine in there too, and she and Jeanette are ignoring Lizzie, who has a spot in the shade-

It's better than picking on her.

Edited at 9:25 P.M. to say- I feel like the mom who made her screaming begging crying little girl stay at school the first day of kindergarten.

I put Lizzie and her two friends back in the big run, and there was minor tussle. I threw scratch and put extra food bowls everywhere to confuse the issue, plus everyone was mad at Georgine and Jeanette for being gone, too. They all headed in the coop when it got dark, so I went out to lock up. Lizzie came running down the ramp, cooing at me, all ready to be picked up and put in her bed on the porch.

Oh, poor little Lizzie. Time for her to rejoin the family. It will just take awhile. You are doing the right thing, Mom. It has to be done.

Hope it works out well.

I am now down to about 15 Dels. I had to downsize. Of course the original 8 (6 pullets and 2 roos) are still here, and the others are from my Claudia/Cyn hatch (including 2 roos). Tomorrow will be yet another busy day, as they are all moving into the Layers coop. The only roos there will be the Delawares. The 2 younger boys are not interested in breeding yet, but I kept them to grow out, because I think they are looking really good. So, Jacob and # 2 (I gotta think of a name) will have about 30 girls of various breeds to contend with for awhile.

I got rid of so many chicks and chickens today that I will actually end up with 2 empty pens, after the shifting around is done tomorrow. I didn't keep any of my chicks from some of my own eggs, as I can incubate them at a later time, if I need to. So, from my month long Mega-Hatchathon (about 400 chicks) I kept only 20. In another month or so I will cull even more, as the adolescents are growing out (and there are still lots of roos!). I am still hanging on to them, to see who I will keep. Each cull time gets harder and harder. I hate to let them go.

But, the good thing is, I am getting closer and closer to my goal.

My ultimate goal (especially for winter) is to keep about 5 or 6 girls each from the breeds I want to keep. They will stay in the Layers coop. There is room for about 50 in there (about 200 square feet). Then, I plan to have a roosters pen. Here I will house 1 or 2 roosters of each breed. This will close up my breeder pens. However, I will continue to keep 2 projects coops going .... Icelandics and Silkied Ameraucanas. Cutting from 14 pens/coops down to 4 will really cut down on work. I will use a breeder pen or two to keep the girls fertile, if I need to. There will be NO roosters in the Layers Coop when I am finished downsizing, so it should be easy enough to grab the girls and roo of the same breed, and pen them together when necessary.

What do ya think? Will this work? Will the roosters fight? If so, I could keep them seperated in the breeder pens, but don't really want to.

aaaaawwwwww Beth it is okay. Check on her before you settle down for the night. She will be fine. If there are any problems, you can move her out tomorrow. I think she will be fine once she gets back into routine to being in the coop.

Kathy I am glad things are going well on the downsizing for you.

I'm decreasing, and you are increasing. It is good that you are sensible and don't go overboard (as I always seem to do!). You would think that as old as I am

I would have learned by now. Nope. Nothing in moderation.

Ah yes I am increasing but mine is a planned increase with a plan.

Orps for Thor...so he has a nice size harem of big bottom girls

Silkies for incubators and hopefully the bantam cochin

My mixed main laying flock will be allowed to live out their days doing their thing but will not be replaced (breed wise)

I am going down to just my Orps, Cochins and bantams.

Lizzie is being submissive, holding very still when anyone comes near her. I got the stink eye from her for a while this morning, but after treats she decided to sit on my lap for a bit, and a few of the other girls hung out with us. I just have to stay strong-

Kathy, you are really moving and shaking! I am SO glad to hear you are keeping the Silkie Ams and the Icelandic projects- those are way too cool. But it sounds like it is all going to be more manageable- I kept thinking about you when I was grumbling about carrying Lizzie, Silk and Satin and and all their food and water bowls back and forth last month- I know it was such a relief just to not have to lug Silk and Satin back and forth - you must have just been wiped out all the time.

Luke and Ultrasuede did the oddest (well, odd to me) thing this morning. They followed Eleanor back into the coop and stared at her for about 5 minutes as she snuggled into one of the nest boxes. She kept giving them coy looks over her shoulder. It was the nest box Ultrasuede prepped this morning after I cleaned them- Luke is busy prepping a place in the corner of the coop now, I am going to try to see if anyone uses it.

Ultrasuede fluffed to tank size this morning when I let them out and chased Luke for ages- first time my DH has seen this happen, and I thought he was going to die laughing.
Luke really is turning into just the best boy- I hope he stays that way!

Cetawin, maybe you need a Jersey Giant or two for Thor??

Beth..I had thought about blue giants for him but I want to keep the orps. I really do love them...even the diva chicken females. LOL And my cochins...love them also. The other breeds I have it is more a love for the individual birds.

Ultrasuede is laying down the law to Luke then? Scott could not believe Thor and Severus walking around together mingling with the girls and no fighting. That is only because Thor rules and he knows it, the girls know it and Severus knows it.
