I dunno Beth. I always take mine out at about a week old and start acclamating them to their soil plus having them on medicated starter. But I can get the meds for them in a flash so I have never really worried about it...so far no cocci issues here or back in Oregon.

The first hens I had had cocci. I thought I would lose them. They were hatchery. I , like Cyn have not had any trouble with the ones the broodies have hatched. I have two bunches; both bunches were on soil from day one. They did get some chick feed with the med. . I hope you get yours under control Scott. My chicks are growing like little weeds. We do have some humidity here in GA. I'm at 2000 ft, so not the highest elevation, but this has been a horrible weather year so far. Nugget's babies never got cocci, which is the way I expected it to go--they're about to turn 7 weeks old now.

Hi! A quick question for y'all that have been raising Delawares for a while.
My girls are quiet, but the boys are another story. I have 5 nearly grown Del' cockerels and they make the strangest honk-squawk-demanding sound. They walk the fence 'honking' whenever they see me outside. They are quite large, but aren't crowing yet. Will this pass as soon as they start crowing?
My husband even heard them 'fussing' and commented that I had some sick-sounding ducks, but it was just those Delaware boys.
Is it a breed thing?

How old are they? Mine are 18 weeks and can finally crow 2 weeks ago they sounded like they were underwater....the hens are pretty quiet unless they think I have treats

Dipsy- mine sounded like kazoos for a week or two before crowing, but I wouldn't call it honking- however they sound the alarm now with a strange version of the egg song- maybe your boys are making up their own thing?

Mine are 19 weeks old and they Crow just fine even in the middle of the day.
