Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Beth...you can do it and you know you can. Build smaller ones and attach to the 6 x 8....

I do have help. We built the run, I'm sure we could build a coop. Now I'm just wondering why I even bought the dog house! Dangit. Oh well.

I've been collecting pallets from the warehouse behind our warehouse where I work, and I'm ripping them apart, separating them in to 2x4's and planks. I already have a big collection of screws and nails so with the exception of roofing materials, I can build it with free materials.

Maybe I'll house the 2 in the dog house for now while I work on building the other one? I wish I had figured all of this out before getting them. I really didn't realize what it took until I came to BYC!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Cetawin. . .. maybe I just need a breather after I finish this one!

Kristen, BYC is an eye opener- I bought the coop the Delawares are in before I knew very much, and have daily regretted that it is not big enough for me to walk in- I have to crawl into it to clean it.

Thank you for the welcome! I do not currently have any more Dellies, but am thinking about getting a pullet or two. I got Mill in mid-March so he is about 5 months old. I got him from a friend of a friend who was hatching eggs from her flock - I think she got most of her chickens from Tractor Supply so they aren't SQ or anything. Nonetheless - I

Mill and think he is my handsomest rooster!

I live in eastern Surry County, north of Winston-Salem.

I would say you're an animal addict! That's quite an impressive list!!

Oh that is definitely true - I am an animal addict! However, chickens are my current obsession - I

learning about them, watching them, etc, you get the idea.

And right now, they are the only species that DH will let me get more of.

The Lisser....welcome, and build it as big as your DH will allow. I'm to the point now of contemplating tearing everything down I have and building one BIG building, like 80ft long and 10 ft deep, 8ft high and just partitioning off "rooms", all under one roof

On a dellie note, here are Pepper's newest "additions". Certainly not Delawares, but Pepper is their daddy. Funny thing is they are showing NO barring whatsoever. Mother is "big mama", one of my blue rock girls

These little guys were 4 weeks old today and looking like 2 pullets.

Hope everyone is staying cool....the rain has dodged us all day here.

Scott- they are darling and they are BLUE!! That's all that matters. I hope they are pullets!

I know what you mean- I have to refigure some things here, too. I have to go through two gates to get to the Orps.- The first door is into the Dellie pen, so of course it takes FOREVER to wade through them and get to the next gate, which is into the nursery, and then another gate into the Orp construction zone.

But doesn't everyone on BYC moan and mutter "if only I'd known!" ??

Lisser - do get some pullets, you will love them. If you can get them from a breeder, all the better. I have some that are very cuddly.

Yard full o' rocks - thanks for the welcome. Wow, an 80' long coop? That would hold a LOT of chickens!!! (I don't think I could get away with that many)

And adorable chicks!

On another note, I just noticed today that some of Mill's tail feathers are coming in with some green on them.

Does this mean he is not a pure Delaware? If he's not pure then I probably shouldn't use him as a breeding roo, right? It doesn't matter - we will keep him with the "bachelors" anyway as long as he doesn't get mean.

Thanks!

Melissa

I think you should do that. You would love it. With electricity in it? Running water? watering system anyway. Central air and heat? Oh yes, the Hilton of chicken coops!
