Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Tomorrow I am going to let the Delawares out to free range. They have been in their new coop and run for almost a week now. I figure I can also let the Layers coop girls out, too, as there are no other roosters there.

Do you think they will all go back to their own coops? It is strange how they know after awhile. I wonder if he will try to get back into the layer coop?

That's why I kept them in their new coop and run all week, so hopefully they will return there. If not, I guess I can encourage them back with treats!

The truth is that Delaware males can handle larger numbers of women than most roosters. At least, that is what Janet thinks and I agree, drawing on my experience with Isaac. They need to roam and have more than just ten or so women to really be satisfied. Isaac is a doll, but you could see he wanted to wander far and wide when I had him in the coop with some older ladies and he couldn't get out of the pen much. And he does take his women farther than any other rooster I've had, way down the 200 ft driveway, into the trails that go down into the woods, just all over the place. He was very happy when I put him back in the main flock with about 22 girls. And he is mating the ones that Dutch never touched at all, like my splash Ameraucana, Snow, to her consternation. LOL.

Give Jacob whatever he wants, Kathy, you need to keep that perfect boy happy!

He liked his life the way it was - did he have a favorite girl or two in there that was with him all the time?

This is very much what I am afraid of if I move Ultrasuede- he and Luke have the girls divided up pretty evenly- Cora, Lizzy, and Alice especially are Luke's girls and Marianne, Georgine, Jeanette and Eleanor are Ultrasuede's- I should have named Jane "Anybody's". They have all been together for so long that I am afraid to take Ultrasuede out and put him with just the Orp girls.
And I keep remembering how Dutch changed toward Cynthia- maybe I will just put Ultrasuede with the Orp girls for a little while each day until HE decides he wants to be there?

Either that or I forget breeding -

Poor Snow- does she object loudly?

Here is a current picture of my Ellis and some others taken by my photographer daughter

Ellis is the best roo. He is very gentle and quite the gentleman. Unlike his buddy Red who is a little rapist. I think Red might be headed for the stewpot.

My daughters dog was enjoying eating salad with the chickens. He just loved the lettuce

And her husband was a little put off when Dodo hopped into his lap.

Chsontherun...those are fabulous pictures! I agree with you...I think all rapist should head to a stew pot!

Beth, if you watch your boys I think you will find that Ultrasuede is not as active a breeder as Luke is. Doubtful that he will mind have a smaller harem of blue babes! Thor had a total of 12 women that were "his" but her only mated about 5 or 6 of them...the rest he just protected and claimed as his. Really watch him closely and I think you will find that he has a small number of preferred ladies and would most likely not be hard to breed pure in a mixed flock. Especially if you know what your girls' eggs look like!

I am considering a division of breeds too...without Thor here, I can separate my cochins and give them a roo, separate my orps with the two Dellies and give them a roo and having my miing flock with or without a roo. There is no way I can separate the Dellies and orps....Cannonball and Fattie will not hear of it trust me!
