Hey Zanna

It looks like we have more than one breed in common

Delawares should have a barred hackle.

Columbian hackles are like vertical lines instead of horizontal bars / stripes.

This is the proper barring

This is the columbian hackle, but on a delaware it will be a very thin vertical stripe

Hope that helps

I was just reading the exact definition of the Columbian coloring. It is in the SOP, under coloring, I think, if you have a copy. It is basically a straight black outlined with silver. Delawares and brahmas have very different type and other characteristics. A breeder wouldn't use a Brahma, and I don't think anyone has. Columbian Rock was added to Delaware blood in the mid-19 century (to "improve"- didn't work out that way), so chicks with that pattern still show up- I have had a few. They are not desirable. More solid black without white outlining in tail feathers can be a sign too, I believe. Delawares should have barred hackles. Not streaky at all, but as a newbie to Delawares... You shouldn't be worrying about color yet. However all Columbians are culls, whether you are focusing on color or not yet, IMO. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...a=X&ei=TubNTd_qL5CftwfOooHlDQ&ved=0CDYQ9QEwAw

Fabulous, yes! I think the older girls all have the Columbian hackle and more than just a thin stripe, will take a close look tomorrow.........I think the daddy probably was the lt. Brahma, not the Del

The breeder offered to make it right if this appeared to be the case but for the original plan of the sexlink cross I was not too concerned. I'll post some pics when they get a little older and get everyones feedback.

I can't really see any silver outlining in that picture.

You would see it if the stripes were thin like they are on a delaware that has the columbian influence. . . .
I was unable to find a picture to reference that show exactly the thin line stripe.

So do they have feathered legs ? ? Is that why you think there was some Brahma influence ? ?

One of the roos did so I contacted the breeder right away and she had only separated the Del breeders for 10 days before collecting eggs for incubation. Prior to that, the Dels were free ranging with a light Brahma roo as well. The second set of eggs I bought were from a local breeder who only has Dels. and has been working on the breed for over 5 years. She is also a member of the Del society so I think I got it right the 2nd time around.............

Since you have been gone we have had lots of new folks join us! Walt Leonard (fowlman01) is the chairman of the APA SOP committee. He is TONS of help to us! I will tell you what I have learned... As Walt says, "build the barn, before you paint it." So, that is what I am working on ..... building the barn. I am not looking at feather color, comb points, etc. I am looking for the "bowl shape," width between the legs, etc. Pinkchick has some of my stock and has fallen in love with the Dels. Mathace is new to the breed, too. She is active in the other 2 Delaware threads, too! Pepsnick bought 5 chicks from Cyn about 15 weeks ago, for his start. I believe he has kept 2 girls. There are lots more newbies here, and it is just great to see the interest in Delawares grow!

You say you want to add 2 more lines and do spiral breeding..... on that note, I would not use the sport that you say is small. Just my opinion. I use these pictures to work with, as recommended by Walt. Maybe they will help you, too... See the "bowl shape?"
Once I get this barn built, I will work on painting it!

Kathy, those do resemble the photos well! Good job!

Laney, I got my chicks from speckledhen. I am setting a lot of eggs from highspringschix. This should be a fun experiment! Mine are 15 weeks old now, hatched Jan 28th. I ended up with 2 males and 3 females. One male was a dwarf, so I culled it, the other sold (then returned!). The other female was awfully flighty, and freakishly skinny... I had to feed her more protein to fatten here up. Still doing that, actually. I have fallen in love with this breed! Cyn, Kathy, Beth, Tim, all these people I am learning a lot from. I have read through this whole thread several times, and found that you hadn't been here in a while. Nice to meet you!

My goal is to narrow it down to six Delawares this fall (October-November). Those will be my keepers. My current two, I will keep for laying.

I would love some critiques on my first batch of Del. girls (5 of them), they are currently 4 1/2 months old, I initially caught them on a Siesta this morning
