Show Off Your Games!

I was able to locate a gamefowl breeder about two hours away from me that sells hatching eggs. I called him and he has joe goode grey, yellow legged hatch, warhorse, sweaters, and kelso's. He let me choose what breeds i wanted crossed and so i chose a dozen joe goode grey rooster over yellow legged hatch hen and a dozen warhorse rooster over brown red hen. he is charging me 50 per dozen and he said when i come to pick them up and see his birds he will make me a deal on whatever eggs he has in his brooding pens at the time i come to get the eggs ive special ordered.
Oh cool. Hopefully that works out well for you. Picking up should be way better than shipping.

If anyone offers you to come to their farm, they are probably trustworthy. If I was planning to rip somebody off (never would intentionally), I definitely wouldn't invite them to my house.

To be down right honest. Im very skeptical of any eggs im buying period. i text the guy and talked to him over the phone. He first told me i could come see his birds that wasnt a problem at all. Then he called me again the next day to confirm the matings i wanted. This time if i understood him correctly i beleive he said he has a joe good rooster with three keslo hens and he put three yellow legged hatch hens in the same pen and is going to let me know whena dozen is ready. when i asked him about possibly getting two dozen he seemed like he didnt want to do this. I can understand why though. The first set would be really iffy on viability if were sitting waiting for the next dozen to be layed. He tried to sell me some pure hatch eggs and he wants 100 for those. I told him my kids and i have been saving for a few months to be able to get good eggs and have had some bad luck so i would like to be able to see the birds i am buying the eggs from so i know what im getting. So this morning he called me again and told me he didnt know about me coming to his farm cause he works all the time and its hard for him to go to his farm just to show people his birds. So i dont know what to do now. Hentold me i couldmpick the mating i wanted then tried to sell me other matings i wasnt interested in cause he allready had half o dozen eggs from those allready. Im starting to get pretty bummed out about this whole experience. Everyone seems to be very quick to rip someone off or attempt to. What does an honest man have to do to get some gamefowl? any input on how i should deal with this guy without offending him to let him know im seriouse?

If he is working all the time, he must have somebody taking care of his chickens on the farm. Also he is probably trying to sell you already laid eggs (from unwanted crosses/breeds) because he couldnt sell them and doesnt want to throw away eggs that are reaching expiration. If thats the case he should offer discount.

If I were you I wouldnt mind taking random breeds, especially since this is your first run. There is a lot of unknowns in your setup and you'll probably lose a lot of chickens the first time around to predators, disease or whatever. Losing a few random breeds isnt as devestating as losing the ones you really want.

You could ask him if he has any chicks, stags or pullets for sale, instead of eggs. Eggs will take a long time to mature and you wont get to breed until late next year. If you get a stag and pullets from early this year you may be able to start breeding in Feb.

Thats my two cents.

And it's really difficult first starting with games u can only really go on someone's word if you're not let's say "in the circle " of knowing others in the hobby. I wouldn't put too much money into your first go round cause honestly you may find out what u received isn't what you thought once you learn more and more. And as you network you'll find better sources than random people. But I'm not saying by any means you won't find good birds first round just don't be shocked if u get had first round or two just is what it is.

I agree with both of you 100%. These are all reasons im on this forum to begin with. i really appreciate your feedback though. Being new to this im expecting to have a hard time getting quality gamefowl.

if you would or could spend some time with a couple breeders you can learn so fast and then you can have an idea of a particular bloodline that you really want.

No disrespect shubin but on the flip side if u get some mixed not important games to start chances are by this time next year your just gonna have a bunch more mixed not important games that u stuck with when u found what u really want. Then u prolly can't get rid of them and may have a crash course in culling

I think the guy was feeding me BS? Even i know you cant put hens together that werent raised together. They will fight. Specially three new hens full grown with other hens is asking for a royal rumble. Im learning a lot about the american gamefowl from being on this forum and asking questions. If all else fails either this fall whe it cools down or next spring i will look into getting a couple pure breeds to start off in my pens i built. what do you guys think about selling gamefowl on craigslist? Ive found a few ads that are close enough to drive to.
