Nice looking hen! What type of comb is that?

Hi DTchickens
She has a very small single comb & small wattles.

Almost looks like she was dubbed?

I would say. It could be that someone thought she was a stag and dubbed her. Are you even sure it is a hen? She is pretty broad and muscular looking, almost like a stag.

Hi Redcatcher
I am sure she is a hen. She has a very small single comb & small wattles. From what I have found on the Thompson Whites is they have the Australian Game blood in their makeup and it may be from them that they get the broad muscular look. This is just my guess from what I have found on the Thompson Whites breed.

All depends on what you are wanting. In the old day's, they had other reasons for crossing. But now, I would say the only use would be to make a interesting looking grade just to have around, possibly giving the American/Old English calmer personalities, a taller/more muscular build. But other than that, I can't think of much. Either way, I would say you couldn't call them pure stuff, but they would be interesting crosses.

Hi All

I am thinking of breeding a Butcher x Lacy Roundhead cock to a Thompson White hen. Please give me your opinion of this cross.
I think they should throw up some nice looking chicks.

You have any pictures of your bird's Pop? I can't remember ever seeing any of them, but have heard good things about you.

We have a volunteer game hen of unknown heritage. She came over from a neighboring farm, she was part of a pair of what I assume were working games that someone had brought over there, hoping to raise some chicks. Something happened to the stag and only the hen remained. When the farm sold and there were no longer feed available in the cattle feeders, the old hen worked her way over to our place. For about a month she would roost in a hemlock tree close to our coop, I would always throw out a little scratch for her to eat in the morning, before I let my birds out. Eventually she moved on in to the coop and settled in. Last year when she went broody, I put some of my daughters 4H birds, old english game red pyle batams eggs under her, which she hatched and raised. This year she came up missing, figured something got her or she had hid her nest, which made me curious which rooster or roosters she might have mated with, her options being, my silver laced or blue laced red brahma project birds which are at least twice her size, or the red pyle OEG bantam which would be a more managable size. I figured it would be her choice for as small as she was compared to the brahmas she took no lip from anyone, she is one bad little hen. Sure enough she come up one day with 9 chicks following behind. The first shot, (not the best pose, but she is in hiding again, trying to bring off a second brood) is the old hen and some of the chicks when younger.
