Photoperiod and temperature definantly part of equation for young birds, although with mature males the environment no longer holds sway. As for crowing and cutting wing for females, yes I agree a major reduction unless a new hen enters picture then males act as if warmest and brightest spring day.

Being someone who doesn't have American Gamefowl or experience with them, that is really nice to know.

Prariechiken - Have any recent pics of your Shamos? Always love to see your stock.

Illia, all of PC's Shamo stock (or I think so?) I received.. Some photos are on my website, haven't gotten photos of the other two cocks yet (well, I have but the good ones I deleted and didn't get sent to my email I don't think.. And of one cock I didn't get good enough photos, just enough to show a friend as he is her bird, as is the daughter on my website.)

I say the attitude is for any gamefowl myself. Be it Shamo, Asil, Malay, American, Old English, etc.. If they're called game, then they need to be it.

PS.. Excellent bird's by the way PC, they're fitting in well now and are putting some weight on, also some attitude.. The hens were fine for awhile, I let them out to free range regularly but the other day they decided they were no longer friends so I have to alternate them "this pair this time, the other the next time.." Deal's always open to ya where you can get some back any time PC.. Keep that in mind.

Great to hear they are settling in nicely. Hows the hen feathered stag doing, have to keep us updated on him after he molts. Good luck with them can't wait to see all the little ones off of them in the spring

He's doing good too, got him by himself in a pen right now though.. He's my "little buddy", he get's let out quite often too, one of the perks of being a single- lot easier to watch just him than having to watch a hen and a rooster running around the yard at the same time by myself hehe. Plus I actually got him used to a tie cord, it didn't take much at all almost as if he had been on one before, has he? I still only put him out on tie when I'm around though. Will update with some more photos later if the Lord will's.

-Daniel

PS.. He has some of the oddest hen feathers though, I've never actually seen a bird that has a feather that is round like a hen, but starts out black and finishes in a wheaten hen pattern at the tips, as well as one for sure that is red like the rest of his saddle feathers, turns black, and then on the tips is hen patterned.

Hey nice to hear your collection is on the rise Daniel.

I just finished a fowl swap with the person I got my Pakistani Assils from, I got a stag and pullet Shamo ( breeder said that all parent stock come from Dave.s chicks in Tallahassee? They are from Dave Tune.S line calle LHK Shamos? Being new to these birds I really don’t know, but will post pics after birds settle in. Also got two Assil pullets (sisters) ½ pakistany (same line as mine) + ½ Hyderabad, also mentioned that the parent stock came from some one named Ralph Holt in Dayton OH. If anyone has heard of these lines please feel free to enlighten me?

Ish

I know Ralph. A great fellow. If indeed those are his birds. Ralph called the other night wanting some of my Hyderabads. I wasn't aware that he already had some. I was thinking he had some of Curt's birds though. I could be wrong. Ralph has kept Manuel Reynolds birds before and may still have some too. A nice man to talk with.

The folks I got the birds from said very nice things about him as well. I have a future swap planed with same people and I would love to pick up a Hyderabad pair. These folks are in Florida and travel to Miami regular so it works for both. Nice to know at least the original stock was good. I am one to believe that once you start making the breeding choices it becomes a bit your twist but if these turn out as nice as my Pakistani I got from them I will be very pleased.

Thank you Saladin and for the assistance with the earlier post on shipping.

You know Pop you where right, these Assils do grow on you rather fast. It is funny with games had not laid hands on some fowl for at least 20 years, now I am pen building and keeping careful breeding records. Go figure ha

You really are jumping into gamefowl with both feet, Ish. You have some really nice looking fowl. It`s gonna be hard to get rid of all those birds when you decide you need the room for your Asils, in a few years, LOL........Pop

Gallo, she looks like a Malgache. I`ve always been entrigued by the breed, but I shy away from them because so many folks have crossed various breeds with naked necks in order to get fowl that look like them. I don`t know enough about them to tell the difference. The real ones are great fighters from Madagascar and considered close relatives of the Ga Noi from Viet Nam. Perhaps someone will be along and be able to tell how authentic she really is. If nobody has an opinion, PM saladin. He`s very knowledgeable on the breed. Looks like a great find. Good luck.........Pop

Here`s a little blurb that saladin (Doc) wrote on the subject.
