Show Off Your Games!

Crumbles for peasants & gamebirds the label said but since chickens & phrasants are in the same genus I am for sure it is o.k. As for % of protein & such I really don't pay attention to all that lol!!! As long as the kids w feathers eat it. &it doesn't kill them then it's all for the good . They crow ; they eat ; they stay game then it's good. I try to give them as much whole corn content cuz it keeps weight on them during cold times.

I feed my chickens dog food every once in a while. They seem to like it more than chicken feed. It has some of the same stuff (rice, corn, wheat) plus some mystery meat. The ingrediants list "Meat and Bone Meal" as the first one.

I buy typical 4-way chicken scratch and a gamecock mix called Piñata. I mix them half and half in a bucket for all my chickens, young ones included. Is it bad to feed the young ones game cock mix? I try not to feed it to the small chicks, I try to give them starter or laying mash... but the mama hens try to feed them the good stuff from the gamecock mix.

Dog and cat foods have a higher sodium content than chicken systems can use and distribute out/excrete properly(urinary tract issues can develop) so if you feed it, do it only as a scratch/treat option not a sole ration J/S and for some if it "don't matter, then it don't matter" J/S LOL

Too much protien.. bad. Too little protien.. bad. Lots of dog/cat food has too much salt(sodium) for the birds, be sure if using a dog/cat food as a suppliment that the sodium content is low. Main thing is find a feed program for you and be consistent with it. Kind of hard to beat freeranging and chicken/gamefowl( and i mean gamefowl as not turkey/pheasant/etc) feeds :p.

Grass is essential to all gamefowl
I moved into a new house and my yard doesnt have grass yet... (living in a semi-desert area). There is a natural rye grass that grows in the winter but that hasnt arrived yet. I try to grow as much barley grass as I can to feed the cooped up chickens. If I dont have grass I try to feed them other greens like lettuce, spinach, and brocolli. All my freerange chickens eat my neighbor's grass.

Thanks for the food advice everyone, good info about the dog food sodium and calcium (from lay mash). I only feed dog food as a weekly treat. not enough to cause any problems i dont think.
