Show Off Your Games!

What a cutie!   Isnt it a little late in the year to have new baby chicks? Or is this an older picture?

Actually J , these were hatched late this year. They are a month old. We got 2 whites and 3 canelos or cenizos...whatever they bloom into, prolly a bit of both. Started with 9, and snakes bumped us down to 6. They are indoor chickies for now..thank you for the kind words, he is a little cutie

I'm just curious- Do you guys cut off their combs so they look "correct" ? Do you use numbing agents? My sister has a game cock and she wants to just slice his comb off and that terrifies me.

I dont cut off combs because I think it would hurt them... but a lot of people do because its tradition, kind of like cropping the ears of a dog... But it also helps prevent frost bite in cold weather. And originally it was done so it wouldnt bleed during a match. To show a gamecock in a "Beauty Show" you have to cut off the comb, waddles and earlobes.

Use sharp sissors, and from what I heard most people do not use a numbing agent, but sometimes use a blod clotting agent or something similar to stop the bleeding..

I am no expert on the subject tho

Usual logic for trimming combs does not apply here although it can be helpful when comes to frostbite. Some do it for show purposes. Birds I use for educational purposes are left intact to demonstrate comb phenotype kids can see and touch.

The trimming / dubbing process is not pleasant for bird although recovery with respect to discomfort is within seconds. Healing takes several days to a couple weeks where wound is healed over.
