Show Off Your Games!

There has been a bit of discussion on this thread about strain names. I have to agree that the names (kelso, hatch, lacy Roundhead and etc. ) have very little to do with strain purity. But in my opinion the name tells a person what mental and physical traits they should expect from that line of birds. For example jshubins stag is a mix, but if he looks like a hatch has the mental and physical abilities of a hatch and can breed these traits on( what would you call it? A claret? :)
Again just my opinion

white,
I understand what you are saying, but respectfully disagree. There is no way on God's earth that even half the birds called Hatch could be taken back to Sandy Hatch. Heck, the story was told by the old timers that Sandy collected every dark legged bird he could find and peddled them as 'Hatch' fowl.

Thus, in my honest opinion, most names are absolutely meaningless as it concerns the yards of 99% of gamefowl enthusiasts. There are those 1 % that have the real deal, but by and large they don't sell anything but crosses and grades.

I went to see a lady less than a mile from my house who breed Standard Size Modern Games... I think I am going to buy this cockerel from her. Just waiting on a price.

He was huge, his head was above my knee.

I think White was saying the same thing as you were. All games are mixes.. Names dont tell a genetic story, they only let the customer know what to expect in terms of traits.

If someone is trying to sell me a hatch, it better have dark legs, BBR feathering and a pea comb. But that doesnt mean it came from Sandy Hatch's line of fowl...

Jshubin.
It has been hard to try to breed the toppy out since 4 of my 5 babies are dead. But the last remaining one I think is a roo without top knot. I have 10 eggs that are 3/4 aseel due to hatch Friday and 13 more that another hen just started setting

Yeah that is a high mortaility rate... were they incubated or brood under a hen? What was the cause of death? I know you mentioned you were going to line breed, perhaps they were genetically weak.

Hope you have better luck with the next 23. Lucky for you its still early in the season, and have plenty of time to produce more chicks...

Appears to be a nice healthy Modern.
Yeah that picture doesnt do him justice... he was perfect, all I need to do is find someone to dub him for me (I am a wuss lol) and he is ready for the show.

Just got the price.. $150 for him... or $25 for 1 month old chicks. I dont want the chicks because they were bred from brother and sister...

I want to cross breed my white AG hen with him. Put the "game" back in Modern Game

I built a brood pen with a heat lamp from ceiling with hardware wire front and bottom and had the hen in there too and straw in bottom also. The hen scratched the straw down through the wire and I think the draft from under pen got them during last cold snap. The brood pen is chest high. The mama abandoned the last baby when I turned them loose in coop so I put him back under the heat lamp but put paneling on the wire bottom to keep heat in and he has been doing well since. So hard lesson learned.
