Did your Malgache come from Ideal ? The hatchery Malgache come very true to type as they originally all came from Craig Russell. I don't know if Ideal has put anything else in them. I have a feeling they have as the females only lay around 20 eggs in the spring and 20 eggs in the fall. That would be hard for a hatchery to keep and make money on. Understand that the hatchery Malgache are not game, but they are neat to look at. They are also not as large, typically, as say mine, but that could easily be fixed with a dose of Malay.

Yep, she (he?) came from Ideal. I got them because I like the look and how easy to handle they are... gameness isn't important to me.
For curiosity's sake I was wondering if there were any other breeds in there. Since you've got more experience with Malgaches than I do, do you see anything else mixed in? I haven't measured the bird, but it's a little taller than my lab mix if that gives you an idea.

Usually hatcheries mix in a layer/production breed as eggs equal $$$, and the more eggs they lay the more profit is available. Can't blame them as they are businesses. Still a cool looking bird though... and I would say she is a he as well :).

hey guys i want to get into raising a few game chickens but i dont know much about them. all i know is that i cant have 2 or more roosters together if i have a game cock. i really like the american game birds. especially the black breasted red ones. the thing is when you guys talk about trying to figure out what the game birds are i dont understand that. like what is an asil? if thats how you spell it i cant remember. ive also seen people say sweater and a bunch of other names. why cant it just be as simple as american game?

American Games are American Games. The names you see like Sweater, Kelso, Hatch, etc., are strains of American Gamefowl that were developed by breeders with said names. Asil are oriental gamefowl from India/Pakistan area. Too many people get hung up on the names and forget that the quality of the fowl should be first and foremost. Learn to house, care and properly breed American Games, then worry about getting some. When it comes to names, once you are the breeder the names really don't mean anything other then a reference as to what the bird should look like.

thank you for the information. i was thinking of building a separate pen for them from my flock and give the roosters their own pens, would this work? i was thinking of going with OEGBs to start and learn more or less. would you recommend that?

Reminds me of when my wife and I first got together and I tried telling her which each bird was talk about total blank stare lol after you research and learn the history of games and start getting more into them you'll understand. Me personally I wouldn't worry about starting with OEGB they are not true game chickens. If at all possible try to find someone close to you to be kind of like a mentor and possibly get your first stock from. I guarantee if you found someone and politely asked you would be stuck at their house longer than intended cause old chicken men absolutely love to talk chickens. As far as housing cocks will kill one another but the hens can be like that as well. Some pens I have 3 hens together but other hens I have to keep by their self just depends. I think the hardest part is going to be getting quality stock to start cause not being " in the loop " you don't really know who's who that's why I say try to find a mentor. Have a good day.

You're welcome remember too they are LOUD and the more you get into them the more names will become important to you.

To add to what pc told you. Many Games have picked-up names along the way as a means to sell them. A good example would be Hatch chickens. These are named for one man, Sandy Hatch. When you look at all the birds called Hatch today and the variations within those birds you begin to realize that 99.9% is nothing more than a figment of someone's active imagination: names sell chickens. Pay little to no attention to names. Chicken people are only bested by fishermen when it comes to lying.

Two rules that will help you navigate your way through the world of chickens. Remember them and you'll be head and shoulders above the rest:

Rule #1: Chickens die.
Rule #2: Chicken people lie.
