Are these recent chicks? What are they? I was done with chicks for the year but I just had a guinea hatch out 13 keets. Wonderful I'm going away on Friday. Now I've just added to my brothers workload. Too cold and wet to leave em outside. Oh well

Since I refuse to go through what I went through last spring with the rain and flooding. It's about that time so what would you use, sand or pea gravel in dome pens? And your reasoning for one over the other if you don't mind, thanks

I would think pea gravel would hurt feet when jumping down from perch. Smooth gravel would help

Rubles I kept taking her eggs and chicks so I let her have one clutch for herself. She's such a good mom. Yeah it's late but oh well I'll save a pullet or two

Gotcha. I'm getting a wee bit tired if cleaning up dust in the basement from constantly having chicks kicking up the shavings. Hopefully come spring my hens work out well for me in the brood pens.

Domes are 4' so I'd say 2-3'. The problem I had last spring was the birds packed the ground so hard that whatever I put down as far as bedding the water would not soak in the ground cause it was like having a slab underneath. My thoughts with the pea gravel was that the water could drain and the birds would be above it on the gravel. Or if I used sand it would drain out and around like a roof. I have seen pea gravel with a piece of pvc going out the back of the pen under the frame for drainage.

I have to move pens to greener grass when that happens. My soil has so much clay any rain can leave standing water.
