He has saddle and hackle feathers.

Those are bullstag feathers soon to be replaced. The replacement feathers of saddle that brown, rounded with stripe down rachis are evident dorsally in the second picture. New hackle feathers not yet evident.


Also note he has more typical sicle feathers coming in. I have not observed the transition from male to female feathering in Hennie birds. I will keep everyone post as he comes into full cock feathering which will not be complete for a another 60 days. I think he will end up being a mosaic. Next year if hennie is real the transformation will be more complete.

After 50 years I have never seen a male with hackles and sickle feathers come into henny feather. I have seen females that visably turned into males and crowed.

I have not seen it either although bird being observed is making changes that are consistent with such. Accounts written by others in the gamefowl circles indicates the Hennie phenotype in a least heterozygotes does not become apparent until first cock-feathering. I will find and post link to it. Statement is not in scientific journal but more than one party reported it. Additionally, mechanism / genetic basis may not be the same as observed the Seabrights.

Another possibility is my bird is showing signs of a hormone disruption where some tissue is producing too much estrogen. American Games in general have relatively high genetic diversity and when line breeding or in breeding is employed as being done here it sets the stage for detecting recessive alleles as this likely is if not a hormone issue.

Now I see it... down the center of his saddle feather he has hen looking feathers. Would be interesting if he did turn hennie or partially hennie. I like his comb.. what would you call that comb type? Almost pea but not as wrinkled as I know them to be.

He belongs to a select group that is supposed to have intact combs which means no dubbing. Birds of that group chosen to represent what jungle fowl look like and provide audience, mostly kids, the opportunity to tough such growths. Red Jungle Fowl are too flighty for that. Part of discussion involves asking them what everything feels like and getting the parties doing the feeling to describe the parts of the comb. I am not sure what the birds think about all the handling but they do not seem to shy away from it.
