@Amykins this is Winter's pen. I know you're iffy about the bars but never has she injured herself because of them. She does like to rest her beak in between them but it has never caused her any harm doing so. And, with the bars, her pen is nice and airy. She can also see us really well through them, which I know comforts her. Then, you've got the bottom that is plastic and the sides that come up so she can't kick her bedding out or shoot poop. And, the top that closes for night time so she can't soar out while we're asleep. Last but not least, it's super cute. We love her pen. It's been great!

SQUEEE!! So adorbz!!:love
I love how the one on the right looks like she has two eyes on the one side like a halibut! I had to look close because it looked like a double exposure of her face!
LOLL OMGG I just noticed that!! Haha. That one, actually ended up being a boy. they switched it on me.. and he tries so hard to be loud and quack like Cookie, but he sounds like hes coughing and like hes got something in his throat. lol. he tries to do the one loud "MAMA??" like cookie, but his comes out weird and muffled, though he tries to get a screech. lol. These babies bring me so much joy and happieness and with their individual personalities.. I cannot imagine life without these two.. I truly feel like they are my kids! its so crazy.. one persons child another persons dinner..

Good catch Jade! I do everything from my phone haha

ChaCha couldn't fly if her life depended on it lol but she can climb like a champ! I want videos of all your little calls flying!!!

That's a rough one! ChaCha ended up with use because the other people in the neighborhood wanted to eat her. Thankfully the couple she was following wanted her to be just a pet, so they kept looking! I had JUST rehomed my Trina goose to her big ranch with her boyfriend (who are doing splendidly, just got an update and some pictures of them this last week ruling their 16 acres!) and was really empty nesting (=P), and here ChaCha shows up at my door! What a perfect little white blessing!

*I too have nothing against meat eaters - I raise my own chicken meat from time to time when I'm able. I feel good knowing I can serve the live chickens a happy life just as they serve me and my family the nutrition we need. I think it's a great little circle of life =)

She is so gorgeous!!!! I'm super jealous! Welsh Harlequin was my "must have" duck breed before I got ChaCha. Now the list of wants is growing like mad... but Welsh Harlequin was my original duck love!

Do you use craigslist for job searching at all? I don't know how popular it is where you live, but that's how I found my last 3 REALLY awesome animal related jobs!
1) Working at a special needs school creating and running my own "Animal Program" - we raised serama chickens, built a coop for a future flock, gardened for our 2 class pet rabbits, learned all about the basics of egg and chicken/duck anatomy, AND ChaCha could come to work with me as often as I wanted! She split her school days hanging out in the classroom and being general entertainment, and spending her mornings playing with the preschoolers and then napped with them until I could pick her up after class.
2) Nanny for a family working on their own mini homestead - Trina was welcome there when she was growing. I got to help look after the kids AND work with the mother to build their homestead and work with the animals (I love milking goats, it's oddly therapeutic). Having a veterinary background I was able to do a lot of the things your average person has to pay a livestock vet to do. I could do all the regular checking of animal health, keep daily health records with TPRs etc, draw blood to send to the lab for routine tests, trim hooves, triage, it was a blast!
3) Front Office at an exotics vet - on reptile days I could bring ChaCha. She sometimes came on bird days, but I always feared for her health so I usually kept her home. She was behind he desk so the dogs never bothered her (and bonus for me, I didn't have to be in contact with the dogs/cats so I didn't suffer much from my allergies, but being trained as a VA I could help out with blood draws/catheters and restraints on all the exotics, all the fun, none of the cage cleaning hassle haha)

If you put yourself out there with a really great description of all the things you have passions in (not just animals), people will reach out to you for their special jobs. The Special Education school offered me the job based on my nanny ad, I never imagined I'd be able to combine education and my special needs experience with my love and knowledge of animals! You are so awesome, I'm SURE there's a perfect job that's been crafted JUST for you out there, you just have to find it!

Omg. I love his face! I think crested ducks have an extra gene that makes them mischievous... ChaCha makes that same "satisfied with my destruction" face after she's done something naughty lol
awe, kukupecpec, you are so sweet yourself. BYC has been such a wonderful escape for me from the hostilities of life in general. People on the streets here aren't friendly, they drive too fast, don't say hi on the trails. It is so weird. But all of you guys around the US and even some abroad who post on here at times are all gems. Love how you ended up with sweet ChaCha. I couldn't ever imagine someone even conversing about committing the unmentionable about her. She's a wonderful little living being who happens to have webbed feets.

But ChaCha can be cute.

I agree. I wanna see people's little Calls fly. @JadeComputerGal and @AmandaVirginia

Have any of you guys seen the video of @Amykins Bean taking a big flight at a park? It scared the wits out of me but she ended up being retrieved.

My friends farm is the next town over. Her female pekin actually used to belong to us. She raises Khaki Campbells. We were in the middle of a move, trying to show our house, and had to stay with my mother in between selling our home and building our new home. My friend held her for us but she became a part of their flock and wasnt a pet anymore, so we thought it was best to leave her with her new duck family.
I do not think that we will jump to any decision yet. Stitch is not beating on her all of the time, its just a few (short) times a day. I think hes getting frustrated because she is a few weeks younger than him and Olaf and she is not ready to breed. I do not feel that he is intentionally trying to hurt her but he is definitely trying to breed with her. We will definitely keep a close watch on her, she is my baby and I wouldnt leave her out there if I thought he would kill her.
Oh I know you wouldn't. You are exactly the type of caring person that should have pet ducks. Your concern and understanding of how things work helps. So you are not jumping the gun and making rash decisions. I definitely think you hit the nail on the head with Stitch being frustrated and her age being the reason she's not sexually ready. She is a very sweet baby and Stitch is an innocent duck who is wired like the rest of us to procreate. Keep us updated. I really hope all works out for you.

That's cool your friend took your other duck and got her integrated into the flock. These ducks are such social birds.

I don't know how to upload videos, so I took screenshots of a video I took of Winter this afternoon. Every other day or so, I'll let her swim in our big pool and she LOVES it. I plopped her in today and started to walk away with my Yorkies calling her name, then out the water she came soarin' for us!
