Show off your Old English Game Bantams!!

I have a question or two. I have a silver duckwing hen that is absolutely the sweetest thing. Likes to be held. I have heard that depending on each individual bird in the OEGB breed are either really nice or are on the aggressive side. Is this true? Is it just the duckwings that are that way? Is there one color that is more friendly than the others? I have also read that the duckwings are very broody and great mothers. I I have all of the same questions as above as far as mothering. One last thing. I am looking for some eggs I can Hatch. Where is the best place to go for my needs?

I have a flock of SDWs and another pen of some mixed colors. Now also breeding self-blues, but they are only a few months old. All of my "of age" girls went broody this year. All were wonderful mothers! And all were very easy to handle while they were sitting. One hen (a mixed color one) was much more aggressive with other birds nearby. She guarded her chicks much more closely than the others, but was never agressive with me. But they were all wonderful mothers. Maybe I got lucky, who knows.

As far as friendly, the ones that I hatched myself and handled alot as babies are much friendlier now, but even some of the hen-raised ones are getting friendly as they grow up.

So the shorter answer is that I haven't seen much difference between colors and I love them all! SDWs are still my favorites though.

Thank you so much for your insight! I think I am going to dive head in w the OEGB. I have a rather large flock of chickens now and the one SDW is by far our favorite out of our 43. Do you know where I can get some eggs?

I think everyone on this thread loves their OEGBs. They quickly became my favorites after hatching some too.

I just noticed that you are new to the site, so Welcome! We have a buy/sell/trade section, but I think you have to have 20 posts to buy (or some number) or you can also check your state threads. Might be someone near you with some. There are also auction threads. Mine aren't laying well now or I'd offer some. But look around the site. Possibly Craigslist or Facebook or ebay, but I would use those at last resort, and check them out very carefully first. Good luck!

Post some pics of your girl when you get a chance! We love pics. :)

Thank you WVduckchick! I have looked at the buy/sell threads but I'm using the app and it seems that every search I do brings up listings that are several years old. How are people getting in on these 24 hour hot sales and other auctions? What am I doing wrong?

My little lemon black hen is sitting on everyone's eggs. Problem is, there are no roosters in the pen. I pull the eggs, and she sits on the new ones. Bless her heart, she's trying.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/754060/the-new-crazy-24hr-auction-thread/12510#post_17615233 is one of the active auction threads that I watch, not quite as much activity right now because of the season, but people ask for eggs too, because there may be someone with some, just not listing them for sale, so just ask if anyone has any.

Dawwww, give that girl some fertile eggs! :D

My surviving chicks are now a month old and just a riot. I'm still not sure if I have bantam or standard birds but I am suspecting bantam because of their size which is just slightly smaller than my Buff O chicks. One looks as though it has some Cochin blood in it as it has sprouted feather stubble on its legs. I need to take new pictures.

I lost one chick last week to failure to thrive. It was a sweet little thing that in spite of eating well just couldn't keep up and was about half the size of the rest of the babies. It's little wings were huge on its small body. I noticed it was following mom around one day cheeping loudly at her the next day I found it dead in the coop looking like it had died under mom. So sad but I have four OEG chicks left and they are thriving.

Yesterday I went out to find sitting on the door to their coop which is about 3+ feet off the ground so today I have to find netting to put over their little run before I let them outside for the day. I'm afraid at this point that I'm going to have a chick go 'visiting' with the main flock and that would be a disaster.

Boy the breed description wasn't kidding when it said these birds can FLY!

So sorry about the ones you lost, but glad several are doing well for you.
I posted a pic on this thread a few months ago of some week-old chicks up on the roost pole. It's like 18" off the floor of the coop and the little booger flew up there at about a week old. I was amazed. But yes they are good flyers. Mine hear me coming with scratch and come flying at me. I love them to pieces. Please post some pics. I have cochins and would like to see those too. I don't think anyone here will mind :D

The Inn is full up right now. No vacancies. I have several young pairs, and extra Roos, I need to find homes for.

I have about 70 chickens and 6 turkeys.

Haha! I feel your pain. I'm full up too, but dying to test some of my new Serama eggs!
