Show off your Peas!

If it was breeding then where is the offspring? Fooling around is not proof of procreating or being able to for that matter.

Here's the chick Coco. I was guessing she was a hen but never found out. This was the day she/he hatched but she/he died a week after hatching. She/he was the first peachick and last peachick I hatched from Colbolt and Jadea. Not sure why all I know is she had curly toes but I don't think that will result in a fatality. I miss her and her mother.

@Birdrain92 -- I'm so sorry you lost your chick and her mother.

Maybe your birds will hatch more chicks next year, with one of the other hens?

It's not hard to fix curly toes if you get to them quick enough. Some birds can die from it if they can't stand up to eat. But even if it isn't bad enough to kill them, better to fix them while the chick is still newly hatched. Have you learned how yet, or would you like to learn how to do it?

Thanks for posting the picture of Coco.

I learned how to with the shoes. I'm hoping that Sage will give me some chicks. I know that the last clutch before Jadea died I got all of 4 eggs fully developed but the membrane was stuck to them so I had to much humidity.

Good job learning how to do the shoes!

Humidity is difficult to manage, particularly out here in the west and if you are much above sea level... I have trouble keeping it high enough for my eggs, and I always have extra little water containers in the incubator. If the chicks got stuck, I'm not sure if your humidity was actually too high, or maybe too low, or maybe they just got stuck

Hatching is scary and hard when things don't go right.

Sometimes stuck chicks can be rescued, but it takes a lot of patience and skill, and some good luck thrown in. If you think you are starting to have trouble this year, if you let us know in time, we might be able to help you. Here's hoping you get your chicks

Sorry to hear that you lost them both. I seem to remember the thread about losing the hen. So, she was a yearling and laid four eggs and all were fertile?
No. She laid 9 when she was 2 years old. She died when she was 3 years old. She got egg bound on the 5 egg and was pecked to death by the chickens. I will let you guys know when Sage lays her first egg. I'm making sure that my peafowl have oyster shells and at least 20% protein.

Oh, ok, so she was a three year old, mated to a yearling cock, died laying her fifth egg. You incubated the four eggs and only one hatched and lived one week. If that is what you are saying then a yearling cock is capable of fertilizing a hen, perhaps I should say an experienced hen.

This is Colbolt and Jadea when they were two years old and had an egg and only one out of the 9 eggs hatched.

This is Colbolt and Jadea when they are three with the 3 eggs in the incubator that none hatched out. The 4th egg was the cause of the egg bound because it didn't have a shell on it so it would be useless to incubate it or at least that's what I thought. I thought she laid 4 good eggs but really only 3 and it was the 4th that killed her not the 5th like I thought.

First egg was laid this day. As you can see she is showing signs of laying.
