Show off your Peas!

I would think that the frozen toes could be the result of too small of diameter of roost.  I am not about to heat a coop but I would like to have high percentage Spaulding.  We plan to go up and see Brad sometime soon, I will have to make lots of notes on how he does things.  128 pens of birds sounds like an all day adventure.

He told me that he used a heated perch. I have Been talked out of that! I am going to use a ceramic heat lamp. No light just heat. I should get my Java in about a week.

Cajun, if you are talking just about peacock pheasants then I am not sure since I hardly have any grey peacock pheasant experience thus far. Usually the price is reflective of their rarity. I know a person who used to raise every type of peacock pheasant including the Malayan. He was successful with all of them. I hope to one day raise all of the different types.

I have read they don't lay many eggs like other pheasants, and they have poor hatch rate, is this true?

They lay clutches of two eggs. Some of the higher end ones lay clutches of one egg. In tropical temperatures I was told they can lay year round. I am not sure about the hatch rate. The breeder got six chicks or seven from my pair last season.

Question. Should I check fertility before allowing my hen to sit on eggs? Assuming she starts laying this year. She will be 2 this spring. Unless I catch them in the act but I know even then that doesn't mean certainty for fertilized eggs.
He's displaying more times in a day than I can count. Also doesn't care about me. I walked right up snapping pics way up close today. Very gloomy windy day here in Central IN. Day started out 6am 42F but it sure isn't now. Expecting snow by the weekend.

Oh also curious. Is it common to see the feather shafts so clear as you can see in the pics?

i would say no if they are breeding often then the eggs will almost definitely be fertile the only birds ik of that have problems with fertility are geese the only other way fertility could be a problem is if there are too many females

Yeah, I watched the discussion. I know that the counsel you were given was in good intent, but reason tells me if an experienced big time breeder like Legg uses them it can be done right.
