Arbor,as you know Charcoal seems to age at an increased level compared to other peas. The father of my Charcoal dark pied w/e male died a few weeks ago at age 7. Bigcreekpoultry is wanting to have a necropsy performed but when her Charcoal was injured in Novemeber her veterinarian noticed while doing an x-ray of the lung area that the lungs themselves seemed to be "aged" much more than a normal 7 yr old peas lungs would be.I'm very good friends with Jeanna at Bigcreek,we speak often and her Charcoal male meant a lot to her. At present my male Kingsford is the only breeding aged male with the same genetics as his now deceased father and my male will be 3 years old this summer.So the race is on to hopefully get as many offspring as I can from my male because he too may only have a few more years left.

That sucks when you lose a good bird. I lost a 4 yr old opal male during transport - broke right out of a box, and I will no longer use cardboard for transporting peas. He literally busted through, I didn't think it would have been possible, it was heavy duty cardboard. He must have been peed right off to do that. Luckily, I have some offspring from him as well, some good genetics I wanted to hold on to, he was a passive bird, but worked well with the ladies. Interesting to hear on the lung issue. I've heard other things as well, but perhaps with continued outbreeding, vigor will improve. Mine is on his last breeding season. He contracted a cyst behind the eye over the winter, and is now pretty much blind on one side. I only hope I can get a few more offspring to work with from him. I should have taken the chance to get a replacement for him in the fall when I imported more birds, but declined on bringing in a silver pied split to charcoal hen instead. Good pics of the taupe as well. I'll be looking forward to seeing some one day, alongside the Violettas. Considering getting a pair of bs violetta, but the budget has been blown, and am currently in limbo with finding a new location to start the northern version of peatopia. Hope everyone has a great start to the breeding season (Mine haven't started yet, and probably won't for a month or so yet, even though the temps are coming up quick now).

Arbor I now have a new rule that I adhere to now and that is to always keep a few birds back.I've spent a ton on shipped eggs,spent another lifesavings lately on Taupe,Cameo and Peach not to mention the Violettas. I have even contacted my insurance company about multi peril life insueance on them in case a building gets blown apart if we have a tornado here.I've got a lot of sweat equity in them the past 3 years as well.If I didn't give a hoot about them many things would be much diffrent here.But then I would have to live with the woulda coulda shoulda's.

Majik as he's called here is a photo op genius! He sees me standing on the other side of the fence and it's show off time. Not quite as proud as Roadtrip my BSSP male but Majik does run a secure second in excellent train extension.

He's lost most of his train from being inside with the youngins.

Hopefully by next winter I'll be able to keep the door open! Currently, we've been bombarded with about a foot and a half of snow. And it's STILL coming down!
