Show off your Peas!

lol...always a blast looking at all the pretty birds....question how long does it take to sex white... I have seven and have no clue on what is what out there

How old are they. You have a bunch so you should start to see a difference by the time they are approx. 8 months. Males will get taller, longer legs and longer necks. The boys will have a more upright/vertical posture and carriage, hens will be smaller and will carry themselves in a more horizontal posture. Size will be your first indicator.

I have had hens develop spurs at that age as well. I have had other males who didn't grow their spurs until they were almost 2 years. One thing I have learned in 20 years of raising Peas....no 2 are exactly alike, nor do they develop exactly alike. Even brothers and sisters can develop at different rates and end up looking a bit different.

Okay, so 6 going on 7 months, I could make some guesses based on your pics, but they would just be educated guesses. In another 2 months you should be able to tell the difference, unless they are all the same sex, then you will be tearing your hair out trying to see differences that don't exist, that happened to me with the first 3 whites I bought. I should ask you, are all the whites the same age?

My guesses in blue...

Two girls maybe?

Two girls, two boys (one white boy in back, one IB boy in front)

Hen chick in center maybe?

Could be totally wrong, too

there prolly different ages I bought two of them which are banded...from one person and the other five from another...the five are the same age

A difference of just a week or two will make it hard to judge sex by size. Last year I had 4 whites in a pen..... 2 were hatched together 2 weeks earlier than the other 2 who also hatched together. At around 8 months I noticed that 1 of the younger ones was bigger than 1 of the older ones. At that point I knew the younger one was a male and the older one a hen. I ended up with 2 pair and I knew it at about 8 months.

Tell me about it!!
