Show off your Peas!

do you have a place for them to go in if there warm...I am assuming you do...and just out of curiosity for when I build my coops for the peafowl after winter...how big is the run and how big is the coop

Pretty peas, what color do you call sweet pea?

SweePea is a Purple hen. Nanu is from Mindy and is a IBSP. SweePea is my only truly imprinted pea although most of my yearlings will eat from my hand. The young ones in the free range pen are teaching the adults to eat from the spoon when I feed them.

I will assume that you are asking me?

My coop/run is 12 x 32 each, I have three. One has an enclosed coop, 8 x 12, with one door and two windows for air flow through the building. The peas do not use it at night, like last night it was -3 when I turned in, they only use it during the day to get out of the wind.

The other two have 8 x 12 loafing type sheds.

The outside perches are covered and notice the piping for misters for summertime use.

Doors are 36 x 74 for wheelbarrow passage.

The metal around the outside and in between the runs is to keep the cocks from fighting and protection from predators.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed, trefoil.
I have been plowing thru the old threads but not up to speed yet.

And destinduck, great to see you post pics.

I feel old, I remember when Zaz was first posting pics of her peas, especially Pie, and minxfox with dragon and damsel. Dragon is such a pretty bird in my opinion.

You guys made me fall in love with the pieds.

I miss Dragon. You talking recently about how you miss your boy White Lightning made me think of Dragon. The raccoons got him. He had 4 children, 3 peahens - 1 peacock, and 2 of the hens were also killed by raccoons. Now what is left of his lineage is Snow White (white peahen) and Peep who I still haven't learned if he is split to white or dark pied. Someday I will have a pied peacock again, just not anytime soon. No more getting new birds until I get green peafowl.

What do you mean by bad luck? If you are free-ranging peahens and are losing them during the spring-summer time, it can be from them wandering off in the woods to make a nest. They sit on the eggs even at night so they are very vulnerable to predators. Many people say that often they get people needing to buy peahens because they lost some free-range ones because they were killed on the nest. Zaz free-ranges her peafowl and she has several free-range peahens. She keeps track of them and follows them to their nest and I believe she takes their eggs to keep the peahens from getting killed on the nest. Also Zaz has guard dogs too that help keep predators back. Some people build temporary shelters around their nesting peahen. Yet another thing people do is pen up a peahen and a peacock for the breeding season so that the peahen lays her eggs and hatches them in the safety of a pen.

Oh minx I am so sorry to hear about Dragon, I missed that he was gone.

My Cherokee was going to be a magnificent bird too, at 2 he had a longer train than my 5 year old blue, Pete.

I get livid over the way he died. I never lost any to predators on our acreage once I got my pyr and they nested on the ground, he always knew where they were and watched over them. Before him I had a very high predator loss, thank goodness before I had peas. Predator loss on my chickens and guineas.
Now we moved back to town, and I have to pen him. And my hens in the spring. Goofy birds, if they would just nest INSIDE the fence he could protect them. Princess is pretty smart and nests right next to the fence usually.

This summer I was outside and saw all my peas who had visiting the neighbors jogging toward the fence with mr fox jogging behind them! Darn near gave me a heart attack!

As for White Lighting, he was 9 years old and free range all his life so I know he was predator savvy. I kept hoping he would come home, I still hold out hope someone just locked him up and kept him.

They get lost real easy when they first move. I just about lost Pete 4 months after we moved, but I happened to be outside and heard him crying and crying. He was only on the other side of an abandoned house next to us but he had gotten disoriented. I started calling to him and soon as he heard me he came running for all he was worth! Like a little kid that lost! He was SO relieved to find me! Poor baby.
