hi Birdman - not gonna second guess you, cuz you gotta go with your gut. Maybe worth mentioning that if this guy is as elderly and frail as he's been portrayed, he may have significant level of cognitive impairment. If so, he may be unable to maintain a stable story, and may be gap-filling where his brain draws blanks.
If you won't have to continue to deal with him, maybe you can rescue the peas and quarantine them till you are sure they are healthy.
But sadly, sometimes it is just not possible to work through the issues with someone who is badly impaired.
Best of luck... I know you were trying to do the right thing for the birds

Cocci doses too? Does anyone else give a coccidiastat when you first bring a new pea home? Or just me? I know they say different ground they have to adjust all over again to organisms in your soil as opposes to what they were on before, everyone's soil is a little different.

No, you are not alone. Quarantine and full gambit of treatments right off the bat.

X2 that's wise.
Also, it seems to me that even if the soil & parasites were somehow exactly the same, it would STILL be wise advice. The stress of moving could lead to the bird's immune system being somewhat suppressed and a bird could get sick from the stress of moving, even if it ordinarily would have been able to resist the coccidia

X3, If they are fairly young when I bring them home I'll even put them back on medicated chick starter for the first couple weeks, I am totally cocci paranoid.

I think anyone is who has had a chick die in their arms of the crappy stuff!

No kidding, the last time that happened to me I went into a funk that lasted for days.

Birdman, maybe you can leave it by telling the man you are interested if he ever changes his mind. That way if his health deteriorated more he has an out. Tell him to keep your number, etc. he could just waffle between loving to watch them yet knowing he can't do it. I imagine it would be a rather hard fact to accept. Would be for me!
