You guys are awesome!
Thank you all for saving all these beautiful birds from such dismal lives. I too didn't know what a battery hen was till today. That's such a horriable thing to do to a living creature.

So how does one go about rescuing battery hens? Are they normally offered for rescue?

This is Cleo and her babies. I got them from craigslist from someone who didn't want them. They said Cleo had disappeared and thought a predator had got her. A bit over a month later she came back with 12 babies.

I know nothing about rescuing battery hens, but like you I found my Hennie on Craigslist. So many good deals and opportunities on that site (if you can stand sifting though all the junk!)
The third chick you took photos of is hideously precious, and Cleo seems like a great mother

This was Frosty, who was one of the best chickens I've had. I rescued him and two other roos from being eaten. He was friendly and hilarious to watch, good with other roos, and gentle to hens. R.I.P. Little guy. :(
He was quite the handsome gentleman.
R.I P. buddy

Morning Glory. A neighbor dumped her and her 5 flock mates in my chicken area because he was leaving for the summer. Sadly, her flock mates all passes away not long after I received them. They were very unhealthy. Morning Glory died of old age several weeks ago.

Caelo. I was visiting a local farm, and they had a huge flock of very young chickens (9 weeks probably). A dog had wandered over from a neighbor's house and was catching and eating chicks rapidly. The owner did not seem to mind. I caught this guy (thought he was a she), And took him home. He is now my "flock rooster" with almost 20 babies.

I rescued this guy and his sister at a local chicken show. He and his sister (along with several other chicks, and two ducklings), were all only a day old, and were shivering in a soggy cardboard box with no heat or food, and only some murky water and soaked bedding. His owner was desperately trying to sell them. I only had room for two more chicks at that time, so I had to leave the rest of the poor babies. I had to rehome this guy, but I still have his pretty sister, named Aster.
