This is just awful... My hatch from Walt Reichert was almost ALL males... I hatched 5 males and 2 females!

You are kinda far away from me in Florida.....
mrheinz77 and math ace,
We may have to do some early trading! We'll call it long distance chicken math!

You guys can trade some roos for pullets and then when you still have an extra roo you can send him to me!!! See it will all work out.

On weights at about 26 weeks: I did not weigh my good roo, he is still alive I hope he recovers more before I leave for work tomorrow (it will be another 2 days before I'm back), I weighed my little roo that did not grow well and got a few pics (will try to post the picks later this week) he was 4# 4oz., my pullets that I put up photos for weigh: Orange 78- 5# 4 oz., Orange 80 -4# 9 oz., Orange 81 -4# 5 oz., and Orange 83- 4# 15 oz. One of the pullets layed a peewee again today, either 78 or 80. From playing with them when weighing I believe it is 78!

Breed from your largest hens to get size into the sussex, hope your roo recovers, there is a lot riding on him. Did he get some bad food, or get into rat poison?

Keep him with electrolytes. If I get there with a bird I give them some coke or gatorade

I do see some egg trading in our future

Remind me... Mrheinz77, did your pullets have the traditional chipmunk markings as young chicks OR were they the super light buff color.

Same Question to you cowchick11... Did your pullets or cockerels have the chipmunk markings or the super light buff color?

My birds are 22 weeks old. In one month, I will weigh them so that we can compare them. At 20 weeks of age, my males were 4lbs 11 oz to 4 lbs 6 oz. I am keeping the biggest male as my breeding roo. I am not keeping him just because of size. I think he has the best type and least faults.

I did not weigh the girls at that time, BUT I know they are a lot smaller. It is hard to pay attention to TWO pullets when you have a pen full of cockerels reaching the jerk age!

Mr. Heinz77,
How old are your girls? Do you have any weights on them?

I am worried that mine are not going to be as big as they are suppose to be. I've got to wonder how the SS were ever allowed to detoriate to the point that the SOP weights were lost.

I have not had a chance to weigh them. I will try to do that in the next day or two. I was looking at the heads on mine and I am not sure I like them that much, but it may be the age. The one I hatched from Alexandra Douglas' eggs has a nicer head. It is a few weeks older than my Reichert birds. (Alex said she got her SS from Gary Overton.) She has some from Rare Roo that should be close to laying age as well, now.

I did have both light and chipmunk marked chicks. At the time that they hatched, I was fighting for my job so I didn't mark which were light and which were dark. (I have lost my job so I am in limbo right now.)

My SS from Walt were 16 weeks old on Saturday. My SS from Alexandra is 18 weeks. I do have a pair that are 25 weeks old that I hatched from Orange Ribbon's eggs. The cockerel has a major twist in his comb. I also have a SS pullet that I hatched from Hot2Pot's eggs. She is 35 weeks. I'll try to get pictures too. (I don't plan on crossing lines.)

In regards to the eye rolling about all pullets, how am I supposed to breed my flock without a cockerel? :lau It is almost the same as hatching all cockerels.

Below is my ONE remaining extra cockerel. His type is good, BUT he has a pale comb and white in the ear lobe.
He is also the smallest cockerel.

The one I am keeping is almost a pound bigger. I will take pictures of the remaining flock in a month when I get the weights on the birds.
The cockerel that I am keeping is from the buff color chicks. BOTH pullets that I hatched are from the chipmunk colored chicks.

Since I do have a couple of pullets... I could send you some eggs in the fall. However, I think it might be too cold to ship by the time these girls get around to laying. They are showing absolutely NO SIGN of being POL!

I would love to see what your Alexandra chicks look like. I would be interested in trading eggs later on if you don't cross the lines.

The baby chick photos are cute...BUT... the big culling desicions are not made until the chickens get bigger. How about we three try to get photos of our birds at around 26 weeks of age. We can post weights and pics so that we can compare what we were hatched from the various breeders...

If we mark our calenders, it would be good to compare them then. cowchick11, these photos you just posted, are the birds 26 weeks old in them?

I am randomly suggesting that because cowchick11's has stock from Tony that is already at that age. Mine will be there in 4 weeks...

Mrheinz77 has stock that will be reaching the 26 week point soon. He has...
1.) Orange Ribbons will be there in a week...
2.) Alexander's will be there in 8 weeks...
3.) Walt's will be there in 10 weeks

All these pics and weights will give us and others some data to compare.
