show quality speckled sussex ??

This cock looks like a cross between a Black Copper Marans and a Speckled Sussex. It is not a pure Sussex. There is no way this color could come about in the Sussex breed. There is nothing in the Sussex breed which can cause the flame colored neck and saddle feathers. However, that can and does happen in the Black Copper Marans when they get too much flame in their saddle and hackle feathers.
Best,
Karen

1. Black Copper Marans showing too much light color in the hackle.

2. Now think of this as a cross with a Speckled Sussex. Here is a page on the Sussex fowl:
https://poultrykeeper.com/chicken-breeds/sussex-chickens/ scroll down to bird ( Speckled Sussex) with outstretched wing.
I don't know the sex of this bird however it is an excellent example of what Speckled Sussex coloring should look like on the body and the wings

3. Now here is a rooster: and hen, this drawing is expected quality in highly bred Speckled Sussex:

4. Here is a poorly colored Speckled Sussex cock :

Now overlay this number 4 with the number 1 Black Copper Marans with too much flame in his hackle.
I think this is one way to get the coloring in your bird.
Best,
Karen

I just wanted to show how my beautiful girl is maturing. Here she is at 3, 4 and 5 months.
I'm showing her along with two others in a couple of weeks. It will be my first time showing :D

Beautiful! The speckling is very even. And the tail appears to have a great angle. Where did you get your stock from?
Is the base color SOP? I've seen praise for a darker mahogany base... I'd love to hear what the experts have to say as to know what details to breed for.

Thank you! And yes--she is on the light side. But she's the closest I've got right now to the SOP from what I can tell. I'm not sure if the light colour is a worse flaw--or barring and peppering (or mealiness?) I'm showing birds with both--lol. I have to start getting feedback on them so I know how to move forward. I have many many "project" birds. They are far from the standard but possess qualities I hope to see in my birds one day. I didn't start with quality stock--I couldn't find any. But I'm okay with that now. I imagine it's more rewarding to pull the traits you want out of an eclectic flock. More interesting to me anyway. I did manage to find some very old stock with a very limited gene pool and they have helped a lot.
Thanks for your feedback :)

Hey y'all. Quick question. My cock recently had a very hard molt, and with it all the speckles on his chest disappeared. Before that happened I considered him an excellent bird. Does this mean he's crossbred? My hens molted and came back with more white, just like they should. My cock's chest is nearly solid green now.

I just realized I need to trim his spurs. Sorry.

That happens to mine too. It does not mean they're crossbreed. I think the males with too much white produce too white chicks. From what I've read it's not typical to breed a show quality male--or you will see too much white. The first bird I am showing and the next is one of my breeders.
......the pictures will follow. I can't find where to add them.

The pictures aren't working ....
I just saw your pictures---I'd love to have that bird.

Thanks! Ok, so I can keep breeding him then? I love his shape. He's got too much white in his wings and tail, but I think his form is good. He had a nice five-point comb last year, but lost it to frost bite. :(

I'm not doing shows, but I want to breed good stock.
