Girl, you were QUICK with the new photos.
So, what is that roo in the back ground?

The only think I can tell for sure is her tail angle is too high. He tail should be around 40 degrees.

I won't swear to it... but I think you want to see the white in the tail more clearly defined like mama24's hen.

Also, the ear tufts should not be all white.

Snowbird, is the guru when it comes to the proper color for the SS. Sorry, I can't be of more help.

That would be my EE roo Mr. Big in the background

Don doesn't get on BYC too often right now

I did contact him and he said that black checking refers to "the black checks running up and down accross the feather primary and secondary."

Look below and you will see the arrow is pointing to it

Thank you for checking with Don on "black checking" that was not a familiar term to me.

Did he happen to say if it occurred anywhere else on the body?

It seamed like early on in the thread there were some animals that had black checking on the breast, maybe roosters? I can't remember what page I am trying to read a few pages each day to catch up and stay current too.

Question from earlier readings in the thread:

Is anyone on here working on Bantam Speckled Sussex or is this primarily for LF? Are there any more SQ bantams than LF?

I'm wondering about size, weight, and shape of bantams vs. what you are trying to accomplish with/from the seedstock/feedstore stock that has been aquired. Yes, I have a SOP.

Checking can occur any where on the body. It should not be there just like feather shafting should not be there.
It is one of those things that we should be looking for when deciding how close our SS are to the SOP.

What I wonder is if there is a way to breed it out....

I have no Speckled Sussex now but I'm hoping to get more in the Spring.

Somehow I've missed this thread, but I'm the person who had that nicely colored but very mean roo in the auction posting that was mentioned somewhere in the first several pages of the thread. He was culled for personality issues after his aggressive leaps reached chest height on me, oh my!

He was a hatchery bird, as was his "sister". Her markings were decent too, I will see if I can find some old pics. She was a darling, and was unfortunately killed in an accident. They both were too small and narrow based on what I've learned in this thread.

So once I have a few more I will come along and post them for your critiques. I'm not sensitive, so feel free to lay it on the line. I will probably not keep a rooster if one shows up by accident, so if I end up with a good one and can't keep him we will have to find a way to get him to one of you. We just hated to kill the one we had but chest height on me is eye level on a child. Not acceptable!

In future I hope to start a proper breeding program but right now time and lack of segregated space do not permit.

Love these birds and just wanted to say hi to all in the thread.

I'm trying to post some more pics. I took over 20 and they all suck. She's normally very friendly, at least one of my friendlier pullets, but she is being very difficult with the pics! I think it's the following around and hold up strange objects. lol. She was shipped to me as a day old chick the 2nd or 3rd week of Sep, so she's about 4 mos old.

That last was the best one I could get of her tail standing up. I do think her tail is a bit pinched, but I think her overall body type is pretty good and her coloring isn't bad. But I am far from an expert!!!
