show quality speckled sussex ??

Don,

I would like to work on the underline of the SS.... With the three breeds that I work with, I would like getting better at identifying the differences between the underlines of the Sussex, the Delawares, and the Marans. I wish I could find a sketch of all three to the same scale and then I could over lay over each other. Then I could really SEE how they should differ from each other.

I went online tonight and tried to find some sketches of the delawares, marans, and sussex.
I really wanted to compare the lines of these breeds, specifically the underline of these breeds.

I found some sketches, loaded them up and paint. Then I bolded the outline of the birds. Then I erased all the background. I also erased the coloring of the chicken if it was distractive to my eye. The delaware and sussex apprear to be similiar in the underline. The marans appear to be different.

Here are the photos that I manipulated...

This is what I see....

The Delaware and Sussex are very busty ladies. The delaware appear to have bigger feet in the photo and in real life. This is interesting to me since the Sussex are suppose to me bigger.
The Sussex appear to have the smoothest, curved chest when it comes to the underside. The delaware is close, just a little cutaway.

Where I see the difference is with the marans. Their underline does not look like the other two at all. It is more u shape, whereas the delaware and sussex appear to have a wide bowl underline. I can see where knowing this would make a difference when I hold the birds. I should be feeling the difference in marans shape as opposed to the other two breeds.

NOW the TOPLINE is DIFFERENT. With the Delaware, the back is long and slopes slightly upward. With the Sussex, the back is long and slopes slightly downward.

welcome to byc!! I can't critique so I won't try. But welcome.

Well,
It is based on the eb brown locus. You can tell this by the brown" helmet" on its head. Has a white breast and brown body.
That's all I got for you, sorry. But the eb locus helps. That eliminated a lot of breeds.
Best,
Karen

The picture of the Delaware shows a terrible underline with the lower chest looking indented......... use the APA Standard to check the underlines of the three breeds. They were all done by the same artist and the underlines are depicted in a correct way. There is no Marans yet illustration yet.
