show quality speckled sussex ??

OK, I'll give it a shot. THe del looks deeper ( neck hackles at back of neck to breast) and deeper every where I look. Are the lower legs proportionally shorter as well??Maybe an illusion due to the picture.

The del looks like a weight lifter, lol

Walt, I found those SOP pictures. I manipulated the pictures so that we could study the outlines of the birds. I made the changes so that I didn't give away all of the APA picture material, but had something with correct type for us to study and compare. If the pictures are violating APA rules, let me know and I will remove them.

Hi, Can I give it a shot ?? To my inexperienced eye it look as as though the SS hen is rounder, from the neck to breast right to the underbelly. Her back looks longer & flat, and her topline has a slight downward angle toward her tail. She also doesn't seem to be as full in the behind as the Del hen.

The Del hen looks more rectangular & her back looks shorter. Her topline appears to be flat & level. And she's is much fuller in the caboose. Sorry about the terminology, just couldn't help myself

I know very little about the SS, that's why I'm here trying to learn more.

The Del also looks like a larger bird in general

Looking at the hens...
I see the differences in the top line.
The speckled sussex has a longer back than the delaware hen.
The speckled sussex hen's back slopes slightly down towards the tail, but the delaware's back slopes slightly upward towards the tail.

The differences in the underline is harder for me to see. Both hens have a full chest which are indicative of a dual purpose bird. The Speckled Sussex hen may have a fuller chest, but only slightly fuller.

From the backside, it would appear that the Sussex Hen shape is closer to the body at the vent. Whereas, the delaware's line from belly underside to tip of tail is consistently angling outward. Is this due to a difference in the looseness of the butt fluff ? ?

Lisa, I agree the difference in the tail area is mainly is from extra fluf and rear body feathers. Does everyone see the difference in the back and how it joins the tail ? The sussex has a break in the flow of the Back and tail. The delaware does not have that break. The Sussex has more of a rear section break than the delaware. Also notice that the Sussex has a slope coming out of the neck Cape area where the Delaware does not.

Ok... so tonight I will try to compare the males of these two breeds.

First, the top line noticeably different. The SS male has a longer and flatter back. The back slopes slightly down towards the tail, like the female. The Delaware has a much shorter back. The midpoint of the back is the midpoint of the curve. The curve is BALANCED. There is a symmetry to the top-line. WOW.. The sickle feathers are different. The Speckled Sussex has some long Sickle feathers and all the tail feathers of the Delaware are short.

Looking at the photos, I feel like the Delaware sits lower on the legs than the Sussex. Also, looking at the legs, the Sussex looks like he has breeches on. Very defined and tight feathering on the roo's thighs. It could be the drawing, but I don't see that on the Delaware. I see a very smooth and curved underline on the Delaware. On the Sussex, there is a clear defining or transitioning from chest to legs to tail. Once again, the underline of the Sussex is longer than Delaware's. The Sussex body screams a rectangular shape. The Delaware is more squarish, with height and length being more balanced.

I took some photos of my VERY young birds. I haven't made a definitive choice on these cockerels but some definitely shine more than others. Feel free to comment.

I'm not a fan of this cockerel's tail but he may develop with more time. I like his leg length. Not dumpy looking.
