show quality speckled sussex ??

I took some photos of my VERY young birds. I haven't made a definitive choice on these cockerels but some definitely shine more than others. Feel free to comment.

How old are the birds? How young is "VERY young"?

Feedback: I think they are too young to make any decisions except for obvious DQ's - Side Sprigs, Knocked knee / bow legged, incorrect leg color, I think this is the teenager stage of the chickens. They aren't babies any more, but they still have so much filling out to do.

DON....Should we be culling for something other that the obvious DQ's when they are this young? It is too early to make decisions about the white feather - right?

They are about 12 weeks old. Way too young for anything definitive but I do believe I have a favorite already he has a wider tail spread than any other cockerel as well as a wider skull. The oullets still look like young chicks and will take at least another 3 months to start looking like anything.

Lisa, about the only thing we can cull for at this age is the stuff you mentioned. If I remamber right the parent stock of these did not have the unwanted white in wing and tail. I think maybe abter the Juve molt these will most likely lose the white there.

How is the Back cushion up to this point on the pullets ? The color on these young SS Bantams will make them showable as young fowl.

The Sussex

Great find - love the way he describes Sussex as "...answers all the needs for which fowls are kept..." - a sentiment I quite agree with!

I was looking over and over again at the outlines of the Delaware and Sussex, and one thing I perceive is that the Sussex hen seems to have equal depth fore and aft, while the Delaware might have more aft due to the upward slope of the topline creating more space between legs and tail.

Sussex Ground Oats .—This is the name given to a mixture composed of
eight sacks of oats (Russian white oats generally) to one of barley, ground to a
very fine consistency by means of specially-dressed millstones. The one sack
of barley is added because of the dry nature of that grain as compared with
oats, which are oily, to assist in the process of grinding. It is a grand food
for all stock whether adult or quite young. It is used more than any other
meal for fattening purposes. No meal or known food fattens fowls so well as
Sussex ground oats, or produces, when used mixed with mutton fat and soured
skimmed milk, such white juicy flesh. This is a great desideratum in a fatted
fowl. It is true that maize contains more fats and oils, but then it produces
a yellow, greasy fat( The specially dressed stones, as near as I can figure.
are cardamom (sp?) stones. They grind the hull up as fine as the rest of the oat.
The Sussex ground oats seems to be about the consistency of pastry four?

Good evening to ya all. Been lurking here for awhile. I know that this thread is SQ SS but does anyone know what other breeds might be mixed in with the hatchery birds? I have 7 birds from TSC that I got at the end of Feb.Out of those I ended up with 2 cockerals SS. 4 SS pullets and 1 light brown leghorn.
