show quality speckled sussex ??

Quote: Where they got it has me perplexed. I have acouple younger SS cckl in two other pens, so I need to take a better look at them for tail development.

While we tak about the males and the squirrel tail, can the girls be carriers? Or is a version of squirrel tail evident in the pillets, too?

Otherwise, thecckls have good temperaments and the girls are good layers and foragers, which is a great plus here.

Quote: Thanks Karen, I will have a loook.

I was watching the boys today as the sun was setting and they were going to roost. In this more relaxed state the tails seemed more "normal" in the position. I marked 2 roosters that had the best tail position so I can watch them tomorrow and compare tails.

I have started to noticed small details, like a double row of tiny white diamonds on the wings of one boy.

ANd in general the thick black pigment on the chest feathers creating a white on black color, then looked at the father and he too is colored the same.

How young? Here some of mine at 8 and 9 months. They are hatchery.

From what I can see you have a lot there to work with. They look like they might be Meyer hatchery stock. For Hatchery they look to have pretty good size.

I have four pullets and one cockerel. Three of the pullets have twisted combs and some have crooked toes. One that has the nicest comb has a goofy tail.

The cockerel has white in his tail and in the hackles and crooked toes

Now I have a question for ya all. These lovely little pullets were all laying up till about three weeks ago. They seem to be going through a molt. Is this normal? They lost their head and tail feathers and some body feathers. And of course quit laying. The light brown leghorn that I got with them is still laying. I've read that the SS were suppose to be winter egg layers.
