I always look at good type first, much easier to add color than it is type. I usually just say work with what you have available and try and improve as you go forward. Main thing is mark chicks so you know who produced what and cull very hard the first few years. Easiest way to improve a line is cull very hard and just keep the very best. DonWhich is better to keep for breeding purposes :

I know it's best to start with the best you can afford, but just throwing this out there for info.
