And boys from the second line.

Any pointers, tips and critiques would be greatly appreciated! :)
Would love to hear others thoughts.

A lad from my other line of SS.
Slightly you get than last guy at posted 5ish months.

Planning on using first roo. Over darker hens.
This lad over any lighter girls.

The thing that gets me is the difference in shapes.. I don't really know who I find more appealing or more conformative to the Standards.

First roo seems nicer, but I wider if he will get any bigger/ taller.. He kinda reminds me of a basketball.

The second roo. (Pic this post).
Is smaller, don't like the comb as much...
But seems taller and seems likely to fill in more to me...
Is this last boy from English River poultry? I know they did a cross to the "Poort....." strain and a resulting pullet won supreme Best in a show up there. She was just stunning. If you coud breed him to some pulets from that cross, wow, and wow!

Don't know where the birds I got originated from unfortunately..: I got them at a small poultry auction as chicks ...

Same with the first flock of Sussex I have been working with... Except a couple years back and a different place.. I think the first flock was more hatchery quality that I've been working with../ but they have givin me some great insights, and what to look for..

This boy
VS...

This boy...

What are their good, and bad qualities both!?..

I keep flipping between them...
But think the second boy overall (once he finally fills out) will be better...

I like the depth on the first guy, he's got a great comb, nice nice nice dark mahogany where he has it... But has overly too much white, most notably wings and tail...
He also just seems kinda round.. He grew quick and filled out pretty fast though..

Second dude,
.. Better overall colour, nice dark tail, mahogany maybe not as rich as previous bird, a bit thinner, but seems likely to grow taller and fuller yet, so a bit slower to grow and fill out.. Hmm
His comb is not as ornate or tall - but living in Canada a lower comb probably won't be a bad thing...

I do Think the second darker roo would have better overall effects in my breeding...

But think I'll be utilizing the two of them in separate line breeding anyway.. And see what I come up with by mixing the lines/ traits a bit...

Second roo, over first Roos sisters, and vice versa... (I lost all my mature Ss this spring to a crazy coyote escapade - moved to a new property this spring... Took a bit of time and a few birds (unfortunately) to finally mesh with the new land and it's wild residents. - youngins have grown up well in the meantime). :)...

I think the second boy seems to have more to offer--but I'm having trouble choosing amongst my own. I will post pics of them soon.
If you have any of those nice big Roos you would like to part with I'm only a couple of hours away! And maybe I have something to add to your breeding program?
What I really need is size.

Never mind, not in a bad way. I was just under the impression that very nice quality SS were hard to find so thought maybe folks were utilizing hatchery stock and working to improve them. I went back and seen the three breeders listed.

Does anyone who is going to the APA National Show in Knoxville, TN this weekend have any show quality Speckled Sussex females for sale? We are going to be there and would like to have a couple of good females to use in our breeding program.

Thanks,

Might want to check with Walt Reichert ( KY ) . That's his general area. Maybe he has something.
He does some real nice winning with his large fowl Speckled Sussex.
Also check with Tony Albritton ( ID ). He may be coming and can bring you something if it
has it available. Another top winning strain.
Best,
Karen

Thanks, Karen for the reply. We had already bought a couple of new Speckled Sussex cockerels from Walt to go with the young set of Speckled Sussex juveniles that we are growing out. He was going to deliver them to Knoxville. The juveniles that we have are really nice. I did not think that I wanted to breed brother and sister if we could keep from it. Walt brought Mom the cockerel that he had entered in the show and an extra one that he did not enter. That was prearranged and it all worked out well. I think that Mom said the cockerel that he showed was Reserve Best of Variety.

Thanks Again,
Ernie Haire
