Orange Ribbon I saw that you were bidding on some SS eggs from Oregon, if you won those could you show me pics please. I have 4 week old SS and would like to get more but I want better quaility than I got this time and if they are in OR then shipping should be easier on the eggs.
I saw that you had a few accidents with the beging of you SS hatch, It just seems to happen to all of us sometimes, I will think positive thoughts for you from this point on, I remember my first hatch as being very shakey.

I bought those from Or. Hopefully they hatch. I've been having bator issues. I had some from Gaggards. 1/12 developed and made it to lock down. It hatched on day 25 or so but needed help. It pipped all the way around but not through the membrane. I lost that one. Several other breeds were fully developed but never hatched. I got some from Nancy Garry. One day 14 3 of 4 are looking good. I got 18 from 06Nicholas on ebay (from Ut or Idaho) and about 14 look good at day 7. I have 6 on their way from Nancy again, another dozen from Gabbards, and 12 from itsmyobsession. (I think I'm addicted). I figure if any of these make it

I should be able to be a little picky with what I use for breeding. I'll keep you all posted and hopefully I'll be able to post pics sometime.

mrh I have used the method of wraping the large end of the fully piped egg in a very damp paper towel, wetting the membrane well,- after you haved waited 12 hrs or so and they are not making any progress and you still hear peeping. you could give it a try just to develope your hatching skills then when a very important hatch comes along you will ready. Thank you a head of time for the pics I know you will place on here. Good Hatching

Jim,

You ARE addicted!
I am so glad you caught the addition.....

I SERIOUSLY hope your hatches are good, very good.

I PRAY you will do a good job of keeping us updated with photos.

There may be very little "show Quality" speckled sussex out there.... but that does mean that we could not create some.
KNOWING what each person's stock is looking like, what traits their lines have, is VERY VALUABLE....

If you take a too dark roo and cross over a hen that is too white, the off spring can be NICE looking...
So, knowing who has what will work complementary with your own stock is important.

I am envious, Jim, that you have all these lines going on at one time. Keep track of them so that you know whose you want more of.

DID you notice any difference in egg size amongst those breeders?

I'm down to 10 eggs from 17. I can't tell if these are any good or not. I have a suped up spot light I used to candle them with, but I still can't see inside the eggs. All I can tell is a dark spot about half the size of the egg. I hope I have some SS hatch so I can be in your club.

Orange Ribbon,
Get a small LED flash light to use. I got a pack of 2 yesterday for $6.99 at a home improvement store when I was getting stuff for my home made incubator. They have 9 bulbs and are about 4" by an inch. How far along are your eggs?

Math Ace,
When all the eggs are here I will compare sizes. Some shipped today and some will Monday. I plan on identifying each group. Did you ever e-mail Don about that 1 auction?

GOOD! Egg size is important to me and it is genetic.
It is also affected by the age of the hens that laid it.... Smaller eggs could indicate a younger flock and larger eggs could indicate an older flock.

I did ask Don, but I did not hear back from him about that. He gets very busy sometimes.... and I forgot to re-ask

I'll be following this thread. I have a month old SS chick and 3 new babies that just hatched a couple of days ago. I haven't had my normal amazing good luck with hatching this year.

I don't plan to show my birds. I may not even breed them. Heck, at this point I don't know if I'll end up keeping a rooster. Or getting a hen from the bunch. LOL. But it's always interesting to learn what is correct and incorrect in a breed.

In today's workd it is "BUYER BEWARE". That is why it is important to know what a speckled sussex SHOULD look like.

Roosters . . . My oldest SS cockerel is 4 months old today. I have heard others say they can be nasty, but so far I haven't seen it. They are friendly to me and each other than my marans at the same age.

Glad to have you "LURKING".... Join in any time you want to!

The SS eggs are not that hard to see through. I have marans too and their eggs are super dark.
I found a super duper LED flashlight pack at SAMS that even candles my marans eggs.
It was more $ $ than the basic 9 LED flashlight, but it was nice for the marans' eggs.

I think a 9 LED light would work just fine on a SS egg.
