show quality speckled sussex ??

Pics
I really do want to keep this thread "pure" and dedicated to a discussion about Identifing and Breeding Speckled Sussex.

Stevenson, how old are those SS you have from Paul Hartier? Are they old enough yet for us to see what his line is looking like?

Just let one or two out at a time and follow them around with the camera. You are trying to catch the natural poses, so the birds need to relax. The treats will help you control where they go and will help them associate the experience with good thoughts

Mine tend to stay close to the pens the first few times they are let out. They get braver and venture further the more they are let out.

I get a chair and just watch for that perfect picture opportunity to occur

Once you get some pics of you SS, feel free to post them here. If you have never uploaded pics onto BYC here is a link as to how to do it.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=504

I like to do my uploads via photobucket because I can store a lot more pics there than I can on BYC's upload area.

Here are a few pictures of my Speckled Sussex Sally.. I would really like to show her and if anyone could tell me what they think of her I would really appreciate it. I have obviously never shown so I do not know the requirements. Please be honest. Thanks.

I'll give it a try... I will be comparing your young lady to this print Sewell print

I think her tail is too high, there is too much white on her head / neck area, and her neck seems too long.

So, now the questions I have for you - -- is her tail pinched?
Are there solid white wing feathers when you spread her wings?

Her chest coloring looks good to me, but I can not tell how big she is.
How old is she and have you weighed her?

She does have the white feathers under her wing feathers..Im not sure what you mean by pinched? In these pictures she is also all strng out so she only looks long and fluffed up when she is excited. I havent weighed her but she is 6 months

Nice Leg Space and broad Breast

Head and wattles ok

Tail High

Good wing carriage

Neck Spangles over size

Short Back- does not carry the width to the tail section

As already mentioned tail should be more open

White in Ear lobes

With the right male with less white and good type this pullet would work as a breeder but is not show quality.

I have a question. I understand that the tail on SS are supposed to be at a 45 degree angle. Is that angle as seen along the top of the tail or the bottom? If the top, then the Sewell print is off on that. If the 45 angle is as seen along the bottom of the tail, then candykeels tail is way to high, and the Sewell print may still not be correct because the tail feathers do not follow through with the 45 angle on the puffy part of the butt. I am wondering if Sewell didn't "idealize" his hen a little by having the tail feathers point straight out the back to be more uniform horizontally than vertically. I ask about this because the SS I have found pictures of on line that won ribbons have tails that look more like a 45 degree on top. Maybe those birds were built wrong and they won because they still looked the best, I don't know. But if the full tail is supposed to be at a 45 then Candykeel's SS is closer to SOP although I do agree it may be a little tad high.

As to the rest of Candykeels bird, I also agree about too much white, and the neck could be too long. It also appears there is a solid white feather in the wing second feather from the top. I am guessing the breast should be a little more rounded and fuller.

Candykeel, thanks for posting your SS for us to look at. I'm just taking advantage of learning by jumping in, not trying to be a dingaling. Well, not a wise butt dingaling anyway!
