show quality speckled sussex ??

Pics
Just remember, the way an SOP gets into a library system is that someone donated one. That someone could be you!

So if you're worried about one going out of date, planning to donate the old one to a library or 4-H group is always an option.

Jim, I'll give my .02 cents worth just to see how close I am when the rest chime in. I really like the rooster in picture 4, and the one in the foreground of picture 3 though that one has a white sickle feather. The hens in pictures 1 and 2 appear to be the same bird to me. Maybe a little too many white speckles for showing? but the white is spaced out nicely. Some of the neck speckles might be a little elongated. I like the body shape with the wide back. One hen in pic. 3 looks a little light, but that could be the way the light is hitting on her. Over all though, I like them very well. The extra white on some of the rooster tails and wings along with some extra white on some hens wings seem to be the only main problem just from what I can see. I'm tickled you got some stock from them. I bet few would turn them down if they had a chance to buy out the flock.

Tell the owner we appreciate him letting us look at them.

The SOP is the same... but I have not included the females AND the first part of the SOP has the "GENERAL fault" section with lots of pictures of things like sprigs, twisted combs, etc
So there is a LOT of information in the book....

My point was only that if you want to view the book, sample it before buying, the library is an excellent option.

Thank you MrHeinz77. .. . . I think we were losing focus there for a few minutes.
Back to show quality ss ?? ?

The rooster has an incredible low wing set in every picture. That would concern me greatly.

The hens have low wing sets too.

I went back and looked at the standard at the front of this thread and it says . . ..

Wings - - Rather long, well folded, carried closely to body without dropping
Points well covered with saddle feathers.

Does anyone know any more specifics about the wings . . . ?

I think hen # 1 has a crows head ( but dang I am always wrong about the call) and her tail angle is too high.

Also, I think the beak color might be wrong on the first hen(s). ... Don feel free to correct me

I have one to play with. This is a Bantam Speckled Sussex pullet, 20 weeks. The good, the bad, the ugly please.

Funny thing about this girl's comb. Some days it has a twist and some days it is straight. I have seen it go back and forth. This is our first single comb breed, so I don't have a feel for how typical this is. (I see it on the males from this batch as well.)

I know NOTHING about bantams.... so, I am going to have to defer to Don or one of the more experience breeders on this forum.
I will say that I am curious as to why her topling isn't smooth all the way to the tip of her tail. In every picture there is a hump on the top near the back....

I have some SS hens from Mt. Healthy, too, and they are nice quality, frankly. Deep dark color, very good markings, etc. I will say that they were VERY slow to mature, seemed smaller for a long time but ended up to be quite large...just super slow growing. As far as personality goes, they are all sweet, quiet, great layers. I'm very pleased with them.

You are so right about the slow growth. I can't speak yet on my flock's laying ability, but most of my girls are friendly and sweet. I have only one biter and one whiner - crazy to hear a chicken go "Ow! Ow! Ow!" when you pick her up.

Do your Mt. Healthy birds have bent toes? Most of mine do. Been wondering if it's genetic or an incubator issue.

I've been studing the sop and have a question or two....

FIRST - - What is "HORN" exactly?
The SOP defines HORN as "A broad term commonly used in describing Various shadings of color in the beak of some breads of fowl.

Well, I don't know about you, but that was clear Clear as MUD to me.

Beaks are worth 3 pts total
2 pts for shape
1 pt for color

Beaks should be HORN color.

So, I will repeat my question. What is "HORN" exactly?
