Lisa,
How are your Speckled Sussex looking that you hatched from Walt's eggs? Did you hatch any really light chicks from his eggs? He told my these were from Gary Overton's old line and would make the best hens. I hatched some of each. Mine are now about 12 weeks old. (I need to look and see exactly how old they are. ). I also have 1 that hatched from Alexandra Douglas' eggs. Her flock was originally from Gary Overton.
I did hatch some really light chicks from the eggs. It is actually too funny because I was not expecting that. In the same hatch, I had buff leghorns. Needless to say, I thought the light colored SS chicks were buff leghorns. At least I thought that until the specks started showing up.
Then I was REALLY confused!
So, I have this reputation for hatching cockerels on the marans thread.... My luck held up with Walt's hatch. I hatched 7 chicks and 5 were cockerels. All my light colored SS chicks turned out to be cockerels. This is the guy that is showing the most potential right now... Oh I just realized I am on the wrong computer to submit pics... I'll do that in a little bit. My guys are just turning 18 weeks old. I am bumming that the two pullets I hatched were born with the typical chipmunk markings.
Did you see hatch a light colored chick in the Alexandra Douglas hatch?
Huge congrats! What a wonderful report!! Would you consider some pics so we can put a show report in the Gallry of the American Sussex Association website? Are you a member? It's so good to hear show reports like this. Please PM me about it.This is so going to sound like I'm a chicken snob, promise I'm not, I'm just excited
!!! Just got back from picking up my birds from the Western WA State Fair. I got Champ and Res. Champ English with two of my Orpingtons
out of 12 total and top SS cockerel, and 1st and second pullets out of 7 birds total. My SS cockerel got Best of Breed! I need to buy a new SD card for the camera and get some new photos!![]()
I took a quick look around last week when we dropped off the bird and tonight when I picked them up. Some of the birds I felt were good competition and others I could definitely tell were feed store birds (worse even on the Orps than the SS). Some I had to really look at and I think I just had the best overall birds. The next best looking cockerel was not as long and got narrow over the top the closer you got to the tail. He had an excellent chest and head on him. I don't always like the head on mine. It was just really cool to see some other birds and be able to make comparisons. I thought I had a good chance when I left last week but not all of the birds were in yet. Also feeling better about judging more
. Hope to scribe for a show or two or three over the next year. Can't apply to be an apprentice yet as I've only been back in the APA for 2 years so far. Had to toot my horn a little and even though I don't think he is on here say thanks again to Tony Albritton the breeder of my birds.![]()
