show quality speckled sussex ??

ANyone know what other birds he has??
In large fowl Tony has SS, White and Silver Lace Wyandottes, Barred Plymouth Rocks, White and Partridge Chantecler, SC and RC RIR, and Silver Leghorns. For bantams he has Barred Plymouth Rocks. For geese he has Pilgrim and turkeys he has Narragansett.

Also wanted to let people know that I saw an ad in the (just arrived) Oct. issue of the Poultry Press from Gary Overton that he will deliver LF SS

to Connersville when he attends the show there, did not say what show. His contact is 1-937-839-5626. I can't remember where everybody lives

but it might be an opportunity for some of you back east! I'm thinking that he is attending or judging at the Indiana Poultry Breeders Assoc. show in Dec. 1-2. That is the only show that jumps out at me for being in Connersville, Indiana.

I would love to see some more photos once they are out of isolation.... Congratulations on acquiring the bantam SS... Are they your first SS?

Although I have never seen standard SS at the chicken shows I have been to,  I have seen bantams.  I will have to see if I can dig out the photos of the ones I took at Lake City, FL  Jan 2012.

They are the first breeders I've had. I had a speckled Sussex hen from Ideal years ago. I loved that bird. Her name was Houdina. She could get out of anything!!

Thank you! The weather changing has caused all of my birds to start sneezing. Just great....after they stop I'll get some better pics!

Going to try to attach Tony's flyer for 2013. I noticed that he has dropped some breeds from his list.
I also have exciting news to share but will put it in another post!

Could not attach the flyer but got the info anyway!

I spent a lot of money but had a pretty good time too. Because my cockerel died last week I took another pullet as a substitute. With the price of the entry fees I could not leave an empty cage. The shows were put on by the Pacific Northwest Poultry Assoc. (PNPA) the Pacific Northwest Winter Classic and the Pacific Northwest Winter Pearl (Pearl was the new one they added). The animals I'm refering to were all photographed about 100 posts back. I do need to say that my SS were the only ones in the open show, more on that in a minute. First, my most consistent entry was #80, she received RV and RB in both shows. Then in the Winter Pearl #81, never shown before, took BV, BB and Champion English. Beating out a blue Orp. (not mine) for champion. There were several English breeds from about 12 Orps, about 12 Dorkings, 3 SS, and 2 Cornish. Even better for the Winter Classic #78 was BV, BB, Champion English, this time beating out one of the Cornish for that honor. I didn't find out until I went to pick up cash prizes that she was also the Champion Large Fowl of that show!!!

The speakers were terribly bad so I didn't catch that with the awards announcements.
My Orps did o.k. but I had some very young birds this time. I had a couple reserve varieties and one reserve of breed, I'll take that. Did win a 5 mo. old Blue Orp. cockerel in the breeders raffle. Brought him home and put him in isolation.
Saw one LF SS roo in the sale area and was not impressed, too much white and not a nice head. Saw a few bantam SS in the sale area that were too young to tell much.
Did want to let you know, and I hope she finds us on here, that I talked to a Junior APA member (also involved in 4-H), Sarah, who is very interested in SS and was showing her LF at the show along with a few other breeds. She took Champion English in one of the youth shows with a LF SS Hen! WAY TO GO SARAH (sorry if I spelled your name wrong).

Hi Pam Nice Job at the PNPA. I saw your pullets they were very nice! I also saw the entry in the youth show and I suspected she was from the same line as yours, do you know if she also has TA line? All three birds were very nice. Very clean ground color, good type and nice speckles. The judges seemed to agree with this assessment, Congrats!!!

I didn't know who you were until the award ceremony and after that was pretty busy with my kids and packing up so I didn't get a chance to talk to you. We didn't put any sussex in the show but the kids did well with some other breeds we raise.

Thank you!
I talked to Sarah, the youth with SS, and she is unsure of her lines as she has mostly picked up strays from swaps and I think one from a friend if I remember correctly. I chatted with her and her mom for about 20 min. on Sunday. Sounds like she is interested in continuing and maybe getting a few more SS. I think she may have similar lines also. Her entry was a hen and mine were all pullets but one at the show and the one I left home are very similar to Sarah's.
What did your kids show? How did they do? Why no SS? Are your SS TA line? Did you all enjoy the show? I tried to get through all of the entries just to see what is around. I got through all but the two middle rows of the youth entries. I keep hoping some of my 4-H kids will get more enthused about going to other shows. Anything beyond the county fair seems like a stretch at this point. I have poultry kids in Lewis Co., WA that will probably participate in the WFF show. Maybe some of my personal 4-Hers will participate in the WFF show next month in Chehalis as it is so much closer or the PNPA Spring Show.

I didn't have any SS to show this year, not show quality, I am still working on improving size and type but might show some of my younger birds next spring, but still developing them. I will be some time before I get color like TA line but I am happy with the progress I am making in type and size. I don't have TA line,I am working on my own line using three other lines of SS none of which are very good size, and crosses with LS for size and type.

The kids competed in the youth show. My oldest son (8) )won best continental with his Black copper marans pullet in one show and reserve continental with the same bird in the second. He also showed a blue PR pullet but with no competition in variety. My younger son (6) won best Reserve American with his nice barred Plymouth rock Pullet from the Good Shepard Line. He also won best continental in the second show with his Barnevelder hen. They went home very happy with lots of ribbons. I was happy because the boys were very enthusiastic to go all three days and seemed to be involved and learning a lot, we live in Corvallis so drove there and back three times.

I don't think we will be able to go to Chehalis this year. Good luck if you go you will keep on winning with those pullets I am sure.

I got a few more photos today. Hopefully you can see them a bit better:

They are not nearly as photographic as my Langshans...

Are you posting just to share the joy of owning the beautiful SS breed OR did you want a critique as to their show quality?
If you are looking for a critique, I will need to know how old they are.
Also, are these bantams or standard SS?
