It depends on who you ask...some people like it, others do not, and some are impartial. I am in the middle. Huge vaults to me are not desierable as they are much more prone to brain damage. But I select on type not just if they are vaulted or not. I have seen just as big/nice crests on non-vaulted birds as I have on ones with vaults. A little vault on a chick sure is cute though!

Here are a few articles on vaults I think are really interesting:

Hope this helps!

I dunno. I can't tell because of their little tuft of feathers on top. They are sooo cute. Wait, this gives me an opportunity to play with them and find out. I'll tell ya what I find out.

OK I checked. Two SG's have definite vaults and the other two seem to have them too but they are not as pronounced.

now I am really not going to be able to sleep for the next two weeks.

I've never had a partridge anything before.. How come some chicks are light and some dark? Does that just indicate that some will be ligh partridge and some dark partridge? Cuz that would be pretty cool.

I have nooooooo idea. I'm just glad I finally got some cute cuddly chickies and they happen to be from good stock and they are Shorgirls and Silkies

I've been hatching blue and splash showgirls,... just a few, but boy are they adorable!

From my pens of silkies I show I haven't hatched many vaults this year, but I should show you guys a pic of a winter hatch black. BOY does she have a crest! I already tape it up because I'm concerned she won't see her food.water.

For me the jury is still out on vaults. I do see some awesome birds with them, but there are good birds without them... and the injuries! I have one girl that I show who is in isolation right now. The cock is randy and, while gentle, I think he bumped her. Slighty neuro symptoms that aren't worsening, not accompanied by weakness or lack of appetite, still laying eggs. Just a bit topsy-turvy, and very like other vault-related injuries I've had. I don't have any steroids left, so she's on rest with vitamin E and plenty of food and water.
