Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

Pics
I personally really like almost everyone I have met in the silkie world. I have met some of my best friends due to the silkies.

On another happier note I must correct myself I have 2 blues and one splash. I was wondering about this last night. The pullet that laid the smaller eggs is blue so that would be blue x blue so I should have had 50% blue and 50% black. The one Fergie chick does have 6 toe nails on one foot but I know it came from her as she 6 toenails on the same foot. I was breeding her to see if I could pull it out since she is so typee and I like her coloring. I will give the chick to the old farmer down the road who uses them for yard decoration and sell my sweet Fergie as a good broody. I have more of her eggs in the other bator so hopefully I can get at least a couple without this issue.
I will post pics today when I take them out of the bator. I did pull off my 4th 100% hatch however.

Jen I was going to ask you about keeping Gaga and Edward together for one season to see what I get what are your thoughts on this?

Aubry if I were to guess and it is simply a guess I say in the 3rd pic the one partridge beside the white appears to be female. The white and the buff look rooish to me. As far as the one with the hurt leg better pics may help us make guesses. I am by no means an expert and it is still very young to be saying 100% one way or the other. I hope the foot is doing better.

And here they are!

Most of my Showgirls have vaulted skulls, and I've had no trouble because of it. I do think it is possible they have a harder time hatching, but it is difficult to tell if those that don't hatch is because of the vaulted skull or something else.

Buff x Lavender crosses are used to produce porcelains.

I was told buff + Lav made the columbian coloring.

oh my. I have a buff silkie hen and a lav silkie hen. what would I get from those crosses?

The resulting chicks would be mixed color (mine usually are buffs with a LOT of smutt) but will be split to lavender. If you breed one of these back to a lavender you will get porcelains like Betsy said!

They are stinking ADORABLE tish!

Sorry for pooping in Dale's cheerios, I feel bad because I'm pretty sure it is a kid, but misinformation spread like God's own truth can lead to bad experiences for novices in the hobby. Plus, the talk about silkie breeders,.. well...

Now, Tish, I wouldn't cull Fergie based on one chick. You could end up culling a very nice producing combination by culling on the basis of ONE chick. If you cull an otherwise great bird, you could end up with a bunch of mediocre birds that don't have a DQ, but might not be outstanding otherwise... (although I know you have a couple nice blacks, at least, and some other nice birds).

I think that you can probably breed Gaga under Edward. Trying something never hurts, and their mother and father weren't closely related. Another thing to do is take Edwards daughters out of your other hens and breed the daughters back to him. That's a frequent practice in linebreeding. He's nice enough, (IMO) to merit it.

i know. they all look kind of rooish based on cockerall photoes i have looked at, but i havent seen any showgirl chicks THIS bald before so i am finding it hard to get a point of reference. I am worried about spending a huge chunk of money on a chick i cannot keep.

I know Jen! They are so freaking cute! They all have little tufts under the sides of the beak and all are bowtied. I was just wondering about putting Gaga and Edward together because they are both very nice and I would like to see what I get. But also I went to Judy's to get a cockerel for Gaga and once again ended up with a pullet so that left Gaga open for a bit longer than I had planned. As far a Fergie goes I have plenty from her eggs in the bator so if she is going to produce a no DQ chick I should get one next weekend or in a couple of weeks. I will just have to keep track of the chick as it grows up and mark it incase something turns up later in breeding. I do have some nice blacks and a few blues with more growing up so I am confident I will improve as I go. When I found out I would be getting the showgirls I tried to up the quality quick as I could afford.
I will get you better pics in a couple of days when they are a bit stronger.
Thank you for helping me achieve a dream of mine for years

You got my two BEST non-white showgirls produced so far,... I wouldn't hesitate to try them together. If you have problems with vigor in the offspring, then it would be a concern, but they aren't from closely related parents.

Toenails and toe spacing is small potatoes compared to type, fluff, wings, etc.

Too stinking cute! Looks like he's breeding quite well!
