hello, I discovered the Showgirl recently and have become obsessed. I am working on building a special coop for them and would love any advice or great links for me to check out. I like to do lots or research before I start any new project. I am finding there is not a lot out there on the breed. Is it best to use a showgirl rooster on silkie hens or vice versa? Can you breed showgirl to showgirl?

Hello! And welcome to the showgirl addiction! I have some info on the genetics behind them on my website www.cloverfieldfarm.webs.com under the chicken genetics tab. I think I also posted it on the 1st page of this tread when I started it. Te answer depends on what you want. If you like the bowtied look you would breed a bowtied showgirl to silkies (dosn't matter which is which but it would probably be easier to find a showgirl roo than multiple showgirl hens). This would give you half silkies half showgirls. You could also breed a clean necked roo to silkies which would give you all bowties.

If you like the clean necked you could do clean necked to bowtied for half an half, or clean necked to clean necked for all clean necks (over time this type of breeding will cause larger and larger patches of baldness. Hope this helps! :)

Oh and as for the coop, like silkies they do not fly so ground space is more important than vertical space. They do enjoy logs on the ground to perch on, and a covered run is a must as they can not fly or see predators well due to thier crests. Please post pics when you are done with the coop! We would love to see!

Thank you, rilly10, for the genetic info and coop info!! I have SG's arriving in March (

) to add to my baby silkie flock, so all of that info is so much appreciated!! I just got a coop over the weekend and it has a ramp that is about 14 inches long and is at about a 45* angle...do you think my little flock will be able to navigate that?? I'm trying to modify this coop as much as possible to make their lives as happy as possible - one side has a wire floor so the doopey from the roosts above just falls thru to the grass. I will be covering that wire and lowering the roost to increase Silkie Huddle space, too.

And please PLEASE, ahartacres, post tons of pics of your SGs when you get them and your coop. I just love this stuff!

Thanks! If you "Like" my page it will give you updates since it is not a group, I don't have the ability to add people. :) Glad it was helpful!

I have not had any issues with ramps as so me have, they just need to be wide, and not too steep. The one coop I have with a ramp houses 5 showgirl hens with a silkie roo. It is a solid ramp with thin pieces vertically to give grip when walking up. It is probably about 8 inches wide. They have no problem going up or down. I don't know if they would do as well with a ladder type ramp though. Showgirls can see better than silkies since they do not have quite so much feathering around their face, so I think that helps a bit too.
