Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

Hi all, I just set my very first set of eggs today and they are showgirl and silkie eggs

. Hopefully I'll get some showgirls out of this hatch and start my own little breeding group. I just love the look of showgirls, they include two of my favorite breeds! Here's my hopeful showgirls in the making

My daughter has been wanting showgirl chickens for a long time. I finally gave in and got her a pair this weekend. She would like to show them at the fair. They are not a recognized breed and therefore can't be shown at the fair, right?

Hi there everyone! I am raising silkies and showgirls with one pen of blacks and a separate pen of blue/splash. I'm hatching out a kazillion chicks from my own flocks and also shipped eggs from different breeders. Sofar the feet from these shipped eggs have resulted in chicks with forked fifth toes or 5th toes that have poor separation. So, I'm driving myself crazy and have a few questions:

  1. Are bad toes fairly common?
  2. How critical is this for showing? Is it a flat out DQ?
  3. Another person said I can "just breed the bad toes out". I'm not so sure that's so easy to do, is it?

Thanks for helping me out :) I think some of my blacks have potential and I'm very excited to improve the chicks I've been getting.

I bought eggs on e-bay from Watson Ridge Ranch, and found out she is a member of BYC.
Won 6, 7 shipped, ALL fertile, 1 had a ruptured airsack, and blood ring, and all other 6 are good!
Incredible for shipped eggs!!!! So far 2 have hatched, waiting for the others.
