hello! Just a general questsion about any breed of Bantams, (specific to Moderns, but there included). Has anyone ever shown a Bantam pullet, and won best of show, or form very good with a pullet? My little silver blue pullet almost won Best if show at another show, but there wasn’t much competition, besides the buff that won, and a nice shamo rooster. When I start going to bigger shows (like I am today) should I except my pullet to do better then my hens? Should I take the chance of entering a young bird, and not making that money back? Or should I stick to my nature hens?
Thanks for any advice!

I've found that my hens always placed better than my pullets. Pullets are tricky because they may not have all their traits in.
I've never seen a pullet get best of show but I have seen one get reserve.

I agree.

@DelaneyMGB25 the standard actually has a points system in which underdeveloped parts are given a 1/2 - 3 point dock. I know it is a small amount, but in shows with high competition, that can be the fine line between reserve of variety and best in show.

At a show I was once at, there was an extremely well bred Andalusian cockerel, around 6 months, and a 1 year old hen of the same breed who was also as good. She won reserve of show, and he won reserve of breed

Thank you! I had a small time show today, and won best of show, best hen and best other breed with my call ducks (It was very small, and don’t have seperate classes between ducks and chickens) But the Judge Liked my SB pullet more then my hen who was BoS at my other two shows. None of my chickens got placed at this show, was more of a talk to the judge and figure out what birds of mine are better.
I think I will try my pullet once more, at my next show in 2 weeks, which is much bigger. Depending on how she does, I will either keep showing her, or wait until next year. I just don’t want to spend the high amounts for giant shows, for a pullet who isn’t ready.

Hello! GREAT news! My state fair was today, and you can only show 1 PULLET and 1 COCKEREL, so no experienced birds! I wasn’t excepting much with my little cockerel, and was a little surprised to win my class, but not surprised to not place in the Best bantam Cockerel class.
But, for my silver blue pullet, I was SO amazing surprised! She won her class, went on to win Best Bantam Pullet, and Grand Champion Pullet! I’m so proud of this little pullet! Some more amazing news is that the judge was in LOVE with her station, build and coloring, which was so exciting, and gives me a lot more confidence in entering a pullet in bigger more exspensive shows. To be 100% sure, we have another show on Friday, where she’ll be competing against adults, and I’m hoping to have similar results, and gain more confidence in her type and ability to impress a judge.
Sadly, I won’t be able to make more gals like her. I had set a date to trade her parents out for a really nice Breeder Brown Red (with the same guy I bought the SBs from), and The hen laid one egg, and I hadn’t seen any harm in putting it in the incubator as a “if it doesn’t hatch out well”, if it does “cool!? Welp... here, that little egg that almost got thrown, is now a happy little chicken winning me shows! Thank God I saved this egg!
