Showing breeding?

I have a black Sumatra well i should have, i say that because he has brown on the coverts and hackle's.
He is a lovely young bird he looks quite good for the colours but its not in the standard of the Sumatra's.
I would like some input on whether i should or shouldn't breed from him?

This isn't a very good picture but if you can get the genarel look of him thats good

Do not breed from this bird if you are planning to show Sumatras. He would ruin any line you used him in. Either keep him as a pet or cull him.

This is not some new color variety. This is red bleeding through the black. It takes many years and generations to breed this out. If your line does this then you have two choices: (1) stay with the line, hatch 100 plus chicks a year and cull to the best 5 or 6 each year; it will take about 10-12 years doing this to get a good solid black male bird; don't judge success by the females as they'll come black in no time at all or (2) get rid of this line entirely and get some good show qualtiy Sumatras.

The above is stated if you want to show birds.

If you're just wanting pretty yard birds, breed him cause he's pretty and flashy. If you're wanting to breed to the sop or have birds to show or sell as sumatras, he's not the one to do that with. Red leakage is a bugger to breed out.

He is called Sid and he is from the same clutch as the brown one.
