I'm back with another question. This pullet or roo is about 8 weeks old and is supposed to be a Lavender orp. Is that the shredded feather gene causing this feathering and always molting look?

I've never heard of a shredder gene.

Where did you buy your birds?
Some say it is a gene associated with Lavenders which causes the feathers to look shredded . I bought this one from a lady on Craigslist. It does not have mites or anything to make it lose feathers.

I wouldn't buy from her again.

That one really has it bad. Whew.

That gene is brought out when you breed too much lav/lav. I believe in order to keep your birds feather quality, you have to outcross to black every so often.

Don't quote me on that. It's been a while since I've read about it.
