Sick birds this spring.

I think anyone (even the peeps with healthy chicks) Who ordered birds from MM or any hatchery who is having a problem. Should have a vet or lab handy. Just in case something is to happen. you have to take extra steps to save your babies. Keep this number handy on your fridge or wherever it wont get misplaced

I just got off the phone with a gentleman from USDA/NPIP and they have not heard about this problem yet and he said it happens....

He did say AE is not a reportable disease. He told me if anyone buys chicks they need to ask before they do so if the breeder flock is vaccinated for AE.

He also said it was a good idea to start a list as to what breeds were affected, as most of these birds all come from a central location and they are "drop shipped". Usually there is one huge hatchery that they sell chicks from, which includes all the hatcheries, not just the one mentioned earlier. That way if it is a particular place that this problem is coming from it can be addressed quicker.

So if your chicks are dying off like flies, get them to an avian lab to be diagnosed and let the hatchery know your results. I was also told if you shake the chick a little, if it has AE, it will have definate tremors.

I wonder if a mod would be able to sticky and close the affected breeds. then when we build up a bigger list open it and put more in then reclose it. Make sence?

I to am going to wait for the autopsy of my chicks. The symtoms are almost identical.
But I have one question, why hasn't a single chick from the other hatchery I ordered from shown any signs. Both orders have been kept together in the same brooder since they came in. The MM chicks came 2/25 and the others 2/26.
By having chicks from 2 different hatcheries has put me in a unique situation with a direct comparison.
Does anyone else have different chicks from different hatcheries?

I was thinking about this theorie. I dont think that its the hatchery at all. I think its where the birds are dropped before being shipped. do you think the PO (or wherever the birds are before shipped) have chemicals to clean the floor everyday? It could be a sickness in the air. Thats how they are getting it. I am not saying it is a airborne sickness but who knows. It could be anything. Just dont put the blame on a hatchery till we know what is going on

PennySue, I have 16 chicks from a different hatchery in with my MM chicks. However, they are a few weeks apart in age. We hadn't heard of the AE yet, and I had ordered the other chicks back in January. It will be some time yet before I see if the newer chicks are affected. I am very upset that I put these other little guys in harms way.
