Hi everyone! I've been passively reading and learning from all of you since I got my chickens 6 months ago. They were rescue chickens and they came from a dire, dirty environment. Since joining me, they have been thriving... seem healthy and happy and bringing me lots of joy.
Today is Tuesday. On Friday night, one of my cats started acting lethargic. Saturday he wouldn't get out of bed. Saturday night he was wheezing. No appetite whatsoever. Sunday morning he had developed a slight limp on the left rear leg. Sunday evening his breathing sounded like a percolator. I took him to emergency vet.
Emergency vet did x-rays. Found something unusual in the lungs. Radiologist consult felt that it was likely fluid rather than a mass. While we were waiting, he seemed uncomfortable on his left front leg. By the time the vet came back to tell us about the radiologist's report, he could not stand on the front leg at all (as if it were numb- no pain, rather just no feeling).
Monday we went to my regular vet. He needed supplemental oxygen on and off throughout the day. Left legs never improved- rear limp, front paw was completely useless. Monday night vet suggested hospitalization to make sure he didn't "crash." I drove him to an animal hospital. (This means that at this point, 3 vets had seen him and none could make a diagnosis.) Picked him up this morning and drove him to a fourth vet who specializes in internal medicine. He is considering a couple of theories- trauma to spine causing nerve damage; growth on lung pressing on spine; fungal infection such as histoplasmosis. I am, however, outside the endemic area (in West central Florida near Tampa).
His symptoms so far include (in order of appearance):
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Left rear limp
Wheezing
Abnormal breathing noises
Left front limp/paw paralysis distal to elbow
Labored, fast breathing
Elevated heart rate (+100bpm at vets office)
Elevated temperature (104° F)
Enlarged spleen (seen in x-ray)
Left lung shows something unusual but unclear if it is fluid or mass. Not distributed, rather condensed in left lung.
Bloodwork revealed slightly elevated WBC. No eosinophils.
Today, I noticed that he was staring into space. I moved my fingers in front of his visual field and got no reaction at all. However, his pupils do dilate with light exposure.
Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this before???? He seems to be deteriorating so quickly... last Thursday he was completely fine. He does go outside occasionally and has interacted with the chickens. I'll try to attach a couple of pictures. Any ideas (even just guesses) would he greatly appreciated... even just pointing me in a direction to look would be great!
Thanks SO MUCH!!
