Sick Chicken - THIS IS GRAPHIC

If you need to use soap, use Dawn soap. I wash mine in water and Dawn soap (if there are clumps I soak their bumms for a little bit while talking to them) rinse in clean water and blow dry (not too close). Don't get the water too deep....my chickens actually fall asleep, lol. It's spa day for them! Oh! Welcome to BYC....we love to help you help your babies :love:love

I'm just curious why a photo of a chicken with a poopy bot needs a "Graphic" warning. Whilst I appreciate that some people struggle to cope with blood and gore or images of internal organs etc, surely, as chicken keepers, we all need to be able to cope with the sight of a poopy butt and more importantly deal with it on a practical level, even if it is maggot infested.

I'm not intending to be critical of site admin (I think they do a brilliant job) or the original poster of the thread, but just sometimes wonder about whether pandering to people's extreme sensitivities in this way, doesn't just make people less accepting of the real world and all it's imperfections. Maybe the more exposed people are to "graphic photos" like these, the better they would be able to cope with the practicalities of chicken keeping.
As children my sister and I helped out at Christmas, plucking chickens and turkeys. We were not scarred for life by the experience, it was just part of farm life and gave you a good understanding of where your food comes from. Removing people from any exposure to this grittier side of life results in many people who take food for granted and a few who do the "dirty work" and see those graphic images on a daily basis and become callous to it. Surely everyone having a small amount of exposure is better.

If it helps you any the cause of the dirty fanny here is hot weather and all the drinking that goes along with it. I don't have two with it just one but everyone got a butt cut probably feels good in the hot weather anyway.
Wow....learn something new everyday. i've had chickens for 3 years and live in Texas and never had dirty bumms unless there was a change in feed or something wrong. I've also never cut their feathers. Crazy the stuff you learn, lol:)

Thank you for this information. For feeding they get Purina layer crumbles, scratch and peck for a foraging treat and (of course) the occasional meal worm treat.

I will wash and clip the two birds that have this.
