Dear All,

One of my five chickens is sick. I initially thought she had bronchitis due to a mucus-like fluid drooling from her mouth (I actually thought that she was about to die). This happened about 5 days ago. But after the first day I have not seeing anything drooling from the mouth, nostrils, or the eyes.

Although she managed not to die, she is behaving extremely lethargic. She is like sleeping all day and has a weird body posture. A picture is attached below (the chicken on the right). She is walking very slowly and eating very little (haven't seen her drink either, but she probably is as she hasn't died yet).

I though this could be caused by a bound egg. So I put on my latex gloves, oiled them up with vegetable oil, and did a preliminary inspection. I didn't feel any eggs in a distance that I can safely reach with my fingers. So I am not sure if that is the case either. One thing I noticed was that she was very warm inside (much warmer than my own body temperature), but I am not sure if this is typical for a chicken or is an indicator of high fever. One final symptom is that she is making a growling sound most of the time.

Do you guys have some clue to what might be going on? Is there any way that I can help her?

I would check the crop to make sure it's working properly, feel the abdomen (between her legs for any bloat, swelling or fluid, check her over for external parasites and if possible have a fecal float to rule out worms.

As for her body heat (temperature), chickens are warmer than us. Normal chicken temperature ranges around 105-107F.
