Hey guys I have a sick Olive Egger. Yesterday morning she was standing in the coop with her head hanging and then fell to her left. She has mites so we assumed that it went on longer then we knew. We got her nutri-drench vitamins, mixed with vitamin b12, permectrin 2 to wipe on and diatomaceous earth to dust her with. When you hold her she will have her eyes open for a bit then close them and drop her head. She will still try to use her feet and flap her wings. She pooped three times last night and it stunk super bad. She had a bit of a runny nose yesterday but no coughing or wheezing in her lungs…she seems weaker in her neck today but is still drinking water really well and eating egg yolk. To makes things better I think she also has bumblefoot starting. She has two dark round scabs on the bottom of her feet half the size of a dime but they aren’t red and super swollen…we don’t want her to suffer but the fact that she keeps drinking water and eating a bit makes us want to fight for her…has anyone dealt with this and give advice?

Can you please post some photos of your hen and the problem with her feet?

I would mix the Permectrin II according to directions and treat her, the other members of your flock and their housing.
Wiping it on is not going to eliminate mites, they are under the feathers along the skin.

She may be anemic if the infestation is bad enough. Work on hydrating her, getting the vitamins into her and her eating her normal feed. A little meat, fish or eggs for extra protein would be good too.

Once she's gained some strength, then if she's got bumblefoot, we can address that. Your goal right now should be eliminating the mites as quickly as possible and getting her built up.

There are several causes as of to what could be ailing your beautiful hen. From mites to disease, it’s nearly impossible to tell what’s making your hen sick. As for possible guesses, it may be—

- Lice or mite infestation

- Intestinal worms or parasites

- Reproductive tract issues (Egg bound, Salpingitis, etc)

- Marek’s Disease

- Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV)

- Heart issues (Congestive heart failure or disease, enlarged heart, etc)

- Liver failure or disease
