Sick chicken

This is why I hate taking chickens to the vet.
They did an X-ray and there’s no obvious blockage. There is a suspicious area near her stomach. Some kind of mass potentially They could do surgery but say she’s probably too weak to make it through. Nothing is making it past her crop so there isn’t anything we can give her orally. The vet recommended we euthanize her. I’m not ready to give up. Vet gave her a shot of a motility drug but said if there is a blockage this could cause a rupture and death. She said there’s no point in treating her for sour crop because her crop issues are a symptom of another problem (ie a blockage). We are taking her home and just hoping I guess. I’m going to feed her some yogurt and soft foods. Maybe scrabbled egg. Vet said I could drain her crop if nothing is moving through.

Any ideas?

I had the vet do a necropsy and there was no blockage. She had undigested food in her stomach despite not having eaten in 2 days. Otherwise everything looked normal. I wish I knew what happened.

Is that possible you have Marek's in your flock? At the end of their life stage, most my hens with Marek's stopped processing food. Did the vet test for Marek's? Or did the vet find any tumor?

I have never medicated my birds nor taken them to a vet.....I have used a little ACV (apple cider vinegar) in their water for a natural antparasitic, too much ACV will cause soft shells...I have also given my chickens Zucchini, Garlic and Cucumbers to peck on... I know I'm going to upset alot of BYC people now...Unless a Vet has prescribed the equine wormer for your chicken you are deliberately using the equine medication off label.......

Hi all,
I hope I’m doing this right by using the old thread I created. I have a new question related to the sick hen that is discussed in this thread. Last week I realized that the annoying dust that is the main ingredient in my chicken feed is grain mites. I had no idea about these pests so this has probably been an issue for a long time. Is it possible that this could have been the cause of my dear Bertie’s death? I’ve read that the mites don’t harm the birds but they eat the grain and what’s left isn’t nutritious. When I dumped their feeders it was all dust. Terrible. Could she have died from a lack a good food?! I’m realizing now that my other hens are skinny. I’m feeding them new feed and nowhere near the coop. I’ve cleaned the coop, sprayed it down with Pen and Poultry spray, sprinkled diatomaceous earth generously and I’m keeping the new bag of feed in a different area.
I’ve been feeding my hens sardines to try to bulk them back up. They are molting so I figured the extra protein would be good. Any other suggestions to help them recover is appreciated.
